Question on future scheduling...

I agree with UGA the first game of the season. FSU-Miami on Monday night and Tech-UGA the preceeding Saturday or Sunday. We will never have deep enough teams to regularly compete with Diploma U so let's get them early. Play UM the last week unless the ACC wakes up and puts us back in the division with FSU.

I am beginning to think we may have deep enough teams

The way the 2007 recruiting class is going I think we will be able to field deep enough teams going forward (if we keep the proper people in place).

Crap, we can only sign 18 for the 2007 season. But the quality of those 18 are like three classes worth of signees in years past.

I think the sky's the limit if we sign 25 per year starting in 2008 (like we are signing for the 2007 class).

I love the excitement but we're still a school that requires real student athletes and much of our competition does not. I hope the state of Georgia keeps pumping out kids that we can take but I just wouldn't count on it. And the nations' best are also looking at ND, et al. But, here's a toast to the dream of top recruiting classes every year.

I for one did like the tougher OOC schedule but I am softening up on my stance because of the strength of the ACC, Just don't tell anyone, I don't want anyone to think I am a softy.
You've got to be realistic as you say -- when USC or Texas is 12-0 --no one questions their OOC schedule.

Nobody questioned USC or Texas partly because they played Notre Dame and Ohio State respectively, but I'd agree even without those games they would play in the championship.

What will be real interesting is if West Virginia goes perfect next year. They'll have wins against Louisville and...Maryland? We could have a civil war break out if WVU goes perfect and, say, Ohio State and Auburn have one loss seasons.

After thinking about a little...

I believe we should play UGA the first game of the
year. We normally have less depth than they do so
this gives us the best chance to be at full strength,
& since they normally have to suspend numerous
players for off season shinanigans, they would be at
less than full strength.

Good idea!

I know why people keep bringing up dropping UGA, or moving the game.
It is because those people have given up on beating them. You are QUITTERS.

Those that want to alter the continuation of southern football history are the same ones that cry their eyes out in joy when we beat the bastards on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

This is not about changing the schedule for the sake of improvement, but changing something good simply because of saying "I give up"

The Tech-UGA game needs to stay exactly where it is, and we need to win.

If the kids this year that have committed can pass their SATs and keep their grades up, maybe it will inspire other great HS student athletes to do the same. If so, I don't believe that this silly conversation will ever be a topic again.

I'm so sorry that you think I am a quitter.

PW let's meet at a game one day and discuss this further, thanks for the slap in the face.

EDIT: PW, I'm sorry what I said, it's not a threat i would just like to meet you and get more of your thoughts. My assumptions are based on many opinions from GT and GA. I didn't realize you were so against it. But to call us names it's evident that you have strong feelings.

I agree with pocket watch. Not necessarily that everyone is a quitter, but that there is nothing wrong with the UGA-GT rivalry except that they have the better players right now. With the game at the end of the year, the schedule sets up to climax at the end and no matter how piss-poor the season went there is always a chance for redemption. The talk about moving it to the beginning of the year because it will give us an advantage is hogwash. Then, if we were to win we'd have to hear about how the only reason we won is because they didn't have any prep games. I don't want to sneak up on a team in the first week of the season...I want to beat them with their best and know that no matter what those butt sniffers say, We Busted Their Ass.

Yup.

LET'S GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!!

As someone who roots for as much BCS Chaos as possible every year (in order to speed up the conversion to a playoff system), I'm hoping for 2 undefeateds (WV is 1) and a 1-loss Ohio State or Notre Dame.

Folks, I am not a quitter either and my interest in moving the game to the front of the season has nothing to do with quitting. Manipulating, yes, but never quitting.

As a salesman I know that not everything is determined on strength (price) alone. Sometimes I switch the terms, move things around in order to gain a competitive advantage. If that is considered quitting then I am a quitter. Likewise, to move the game to the first week of the year is in order to gain a competitive advantage and falls in line no differently than Clemson moving our game against us, etc.

The advantages in general:
1) We finish the year against Miami which means a whole lot more to our ACC season. (UGA does the same by the way in their conference)
2) We build up every year toward a great game but once the game is over, 11 more 'seasons' are available in order for us to market ourselves effectively throughout the state. End of year, the state will remember less our game and more the conference results and bowl results. IMO, this takes away the huge reason that the media, politicians, fans etc. are so one sided currently.
3) Nationally, it makes the game more important. Tech-UGA is just not seen as a big national game anymore. It gets coverage but competes with so many others. At the beginning of the season though, only FSU-UM is available as a good rivalry game that you can count on seeing. I think Tech-UGA could find its own place which is good.

4) The fact that I do believe that we'd win more often early is just a side benefit.

midatlantech,
you're not a quitter, because of your making changes to keep the edge over the competition. If you stop juggling your wares terms and/or conditions, you will THEN be a quitter. You'll quit being a salesman and begin being an "ORDER TAKER". The world is full of those and no one needs them. Keep your edge man, keep your edge. I realize this has ablosutely not a thing to do w/your original idea but it was my soap box opportunity.

Well Said MID!

Emotions got the best of me with my context to PW, I apologize. I don't necessarily think it would give us an edge as much as it would help us focus on the tougher ACC after the game win or lose.

A few weeks ago I wanted to start a thread on this issue but now I'm glad I didn't. Don't be surprised though, this subject isn't finished.

I am sorry about offending you or anyone. QUITTER is a horribly insulting word.

I should have said that moving this game to anywhere other than Thanksgiving week was an act of quitting.

What would Tech people have said about UGA if they tried to move the game just because they were losing to us 7 years in a row? I would have called them QUITTERS and laughed my ass off at them.
The SOB (Theron Sapp) that scored the touchdown to end that 7 year losing streak to Tech is in the uga hall of fame!
Very few seem to want to recall those days.
I'm not that old, but I will bet that some uga fans during that stretch claimed that Tech had an unfair advantage over their beloved cow pasture team, but they still didn't move the game. (Don't give me play dates in the early 20th century. I am not talking about playing in Piedmont Park)

Times changed and uga started to dominate Tech in the '70s. I won't even try to explain all of the changes, but Dodd retired and Dooley was hired. Black student athletes were finally allowed to compete, but I have no idea if Tech and uga were at the same speed on the acceptance meter. That doesn't matter.
What does matter is that we need to be Ga. Tech and win most of our football games, uga included.

My fault I'm sure, but John you did not notice what I said about great students that happen to be great football players. Times will change again. Sometime soon, maybe it's this year that great competitors on the football field will also be great competitors in the high school classroom.
My belief is that great HS student athletes will want to continue their education while they win at Tech.
When we start beating uga again it will be with these type of kids, and we only need 22 a year.
That will be an unfair advantage!

I would love to meet you too. Just let me know.
