Did anyone else notice the umpire standing over the ball while the Clemson defense ran onto the field although the play clock was counting down? On one occasion the clock was well inside 15 secs and he was still standing over the ball. I have not seen or heard any comment post game but it seemed peculiar to me. In my refereeing days the umpire stepped away once the whistle was blown to start the play clock.

it usually happens when the offense makes a substitution and the defense is allowed time to counter with a substitution of it's own. I'm not sure of the exact situation in the game your talking about though.

It was on the fake FG. the ref that usually stands around the linebackers stepped in and stood over the ball till the D got lined up.

actually, i remember on another play when it was 3rd down and our offense was ready but clemson was subbing players. we kept hollering "snap the ball" and i think the ref was holding things up.

There is a rule that if the offense subs players the defense has to be given ample time to sub in their own players. If you want to hurry up then you can't sub players.

As I see now that Champ said above.
