Quit complaining about the defense

Enough is enough. I've had with these mother phuckin' threads about our mother phuckin' defense!! Now strap yourselves in. We're about to beat some phuckin' seminoles.

Giving up 487 yards does not a championship caliber team make!!! Without the turnovers we lose!! Our offense is getting better. The D is not!

So you're admitting that the defense did not play well.

But you're saying we shouldn't say they didn't play well.

Interesting.

You're putting words in my mouth. I am calling him captain obvious for his lame "if we don't get 5 turnovers we don't win." No shit. And if we didn't score on offense we wouldn't have won either.

Last I checked, the defense recovered turnovers. So 5 turnovers recovered in the defensive stat column is not a bad thing.

If anything less than championship caliber is not playing well according to you, then it's obvious you haven't been a GT fan for a while. Be prepared to be depressed if championship caliber is your standard for playing well.

Not to mention that 200 of those yards were given up in the prevent defense.

Obviously it's not ideal, no one is saying that the defense was great or that it can carry this team to a national title. However, I'm not going to call for people's jobs, scholarships, or first born child because of it.

Another thing that many of you are forgetting is that our offense is one of our best defenses because we are really clicking now and starting to win the time of possession battle.

I think this is a dangerous stat. Yeah, we might have a great 10 play drive that eats up 6 minutes, but we also may break a 70 yard run on the third play and have a 45 second drive. Counting on our offesnse to keep our defense off the field is just sweeping our problem under the rug and hoping nobody notices.

the bottom line is our defensive performance will cause us to lose against better disciplined teams.

This.

Also, BOR, for the most part, I agree with you about our secondary, except Tarrant. Why is he always chasing his receiver 3 yards back? He ends up with a few tackles because he's fast and he gets to the receiver eventaully for the stop, but his coverage sucks. I appreciate what he's done on special teams, but he needs to get his **** mind rite when he's playing corner.

Georgia Tech fans want there to be a winning attitude but instead it's a whining attitude. If we lose it's the end of the world, and if we win it's still the end of the world. Every fault that shows after a game gets whined about for whole week. It's not that our defense didn't stink this game, it's that there are 10 threads calling for a coach to be fired after a WIN!

I'm not worried about hurting some player or coaches egos, or that weaknesses can't be discussed, it just seems there are some fans that won't be happ till we win 222-0 in every game. Those fans are going to be dissapointed every week. Enjoy the win everyonce in awhile and save the bellyaching for the offseaon.

+1000

Quit your bitchin'

Also a little football 101. People are wondering why Tarrant is so far the receiver. It is because he is playing an inverted cov 2. This is where the corner drops back deep to play safety, the safety comes down and plays the hook/curl and the LB plays the flat. If Qb sees this quickly he will hit the void in between the CB and LB it will be 8-10 yds every time.
I wish a lot of you would watch the game over again a watch how far the LBs was play in to keep everything in front of them. They had to be 15yds deep, so of course they going to give up a significant amount yards in the air if your whole objective is to keep everything in front of you

So you still think we are a championship caliber team? We'll be lucky if we play in the ACC CG. But even so, I don't call that a championship caliber team.

My reaction was a whole lot measured than most after the Clemson and Miami games and I have serious questions about Wommack. We're playing soft, gang-tackling, tackling from behind, letting many 3 yard runs become 8 yard runs and many incompletions or sacks become 20 yard passes.

Any team with BCS-level talent should be able to get pressure on the QB. Sometimes you can get a lot of pressure, sometimes not enough but you simply can't have your blitz picked up EVERY SINGLE FREAKING TIME. Nor can you have a Mike linebacker get run around EVERY SINGLE FREAKING TIME by an RB, option or no option.

I still think our defense played decently against Clemson until we had 7 straight drives ending in a punt or turnover, but neither Clemson or UNC has proved to be an offensive power. Thankfully VPI has issues on offense and UGA and FSU have been inconsistent on offense to say the least, but I'm very worried about our defense making one-day superstar offenses.

And if not for TO's we probably would have been beaten. Our D, except for Morgan, should give their Scholly's back.

Not intending to offend you Long, but that is an asinine comment and a very naïve and quite frankly stupid way of thinking and eval of our D

A good defense creates turnovers. That's exactly what we did last night

Who ****in cares about how many yds we give up when we create turnovers and beat a team up and down the field. We beat that team more handidly than the scoreboard indicates. Don't forget they got 7 on a kick return which goes toward our ST not our D

I'll take a W any way we get it. Whether we give up 800 or 8 yds. The only thing that matters is the outcome

No one remembers where your D ranks on Total Ydg per game when you win 9, 10, or 13 games.

The people that worry about those kind of stats are usually losers or THE losers.

If you give up400 yds and generate 5 TO's (1 for 6pts), and give win by basically 3 possessions, then most "knowledgeable" of the game will tell you that's a FINE performance.

THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE ON HERE who are focussed on all the minute negative details instead of the POSITIVES.

Those people, IMO, need either A: a reality check and re-education of the game or sports in general, or B: to just shut the hell up and read the boxscores and call it a day

Not necessarily You LONG, (however in this case it WOULD be) but many others on here. We're continuing to right the ship and all the nit pickin' negativity is bull**** and not wanted or needed

We Won, We won handidly, and we need to keep the train and momentum going forward.

We're may be in for a dogfight next week...and I for one am looking for a big road W (and could give 3 shi_ts if we give up 700 yds in doing so)

Our defense, although not stout at all in the yardage game, is excellent at forcing turnovers. We shut down UNC last week when they were still flying high. Yes, I know UVA shut them down this week too, but that doesn't mean anything. You can't compare teams based on common opponents. We have proven that time and time again.

The way many of you are feeling about our defense right now is the way that about every team feels about their defense after playing us, Florida, (insert spread option team here). The spread is a great offense. It's extremely hard to defend. People are starting to notice it. Look at how Les Miles used option plays on numerous occasions against UGA and even NFL teams are putting in a Wildcat front which is essentially a variant of the option.

The option produces yardage, but with great yardage comes great risk. The risk is turnovers. We exploited that risk last night against Mississippi State. Mississippi State reminded me of us last year in some of our losses. Put up big yardage, but too many costly turnovers to win. I give a ton of the credit to our defense.

Another thing that many of you are forgetting is that our offense is one of our best defenses because we are really clicking now and starting to win the time of possession battle. Someone was talking about how we didn't force a punt last night. I will take 5 turnovers any day over 5 punts. I don't know if that's just me, but I think CPJ would feel the same way too.

My main point is that the option is hard to scheme against and hard to shut down. LSU couldn't even shut us down and they had weeks to prepare for us with one of the top coaches and personnel in all of college football. We still put up 314 yards of offense to their 324. Do you think LSU fans were bitching after the game about their defense. No, they were happy because they forced 3 turnovers and good special teams play.

If anything, all you defensive haters should be hating on the kick off coverage. We look like swiss cheese out there. Kick off coverage isn't coached by Wommack last I checked. This has to be the most hate a defensive coordinator has received after forcing 5 turnovers and winning by more than 1 score. I honestly think that people just look for stuff to bitch about after each game.

After the Clemson game: our team can't play more than 1 quarter (I was on that bandwagon ... guilty). Blair is awesome.

After the Miami game: we are only going to win 7, our defense sucks, fire Wommack.

After the UNC game: Blair sucks, we need a new kicker. Our offense needs to learn how to put the ball in the endzone when they are in the redzone. Our defense stepped up. Wommack is awesome.

After the MSU game: Our defense sucks. (Still haven't heard anything about Kick Off Coverage).

Maybe after sleeping on it, many of you will come to your senses. Our defense is OK. They aren't horrid. A horrid defense wouldn't have picked up those turnovers. These guys play with their head on a swivel and can get those turnovers when they are available.

A legitimate concern: special teams. Our kicker still hasn't had to prove himself since the UNC game. And our kick off coverage is horrendous.
What Defense.......................

When a team doesnt punt at all in a game, you have defensive problems, football 101

I discovered something interesting. I decided to look at the defensive stats of the 2007 LSU National Championship team to gain some perspective. That team was known for having a stout defense and knowing how to win football games. Here are some stats I wanna present for you:

LSU(10-1) vs. Ole Miss(3-8)
Ole Miss
Total Yards = 466

LSU(10-2) vs. Arkansas(8-4)
Arkansas
Total Yards = 513

Some were saying that good teams don't give up 487 yards. I beg to differ.

Note: I don't think we are national championship caliber. But we aren't as bad as some are labeling us.
