I've read numerous posts wondering why people are so upset about this game when we won and clinched the ACC Coastal. It's quite simple. You look at our offensive output against one of the five worst teams in the nation and then you consider the following:

1) We play a seemingly resurgent UGAy team that we haven't beat in what seems like a lifetime.
2) We will play a good team in the ACCCG.

The kind of effort shown yesterday, most specifically our quarterback's inability to keep the ball in this dimension, paint a pretty gloomy picture for the rest of the year.

Just a few weeks ago we were all hyped up about going to the OB and beating the mutts. The odds of either of those things happening don't seem quite as good now.

I hear you, but just think it is incorrect logic. I'll just say that if the last game is an indication of what the next game will be, we wouldn't have beaten Miami and UGA sure as hell wouldn't have beaten Auburn.
I wish we would have played better, but I think this team has shown it will do what is necessary to win.
At least, I hope so.

The problem with your assertion is that you're projecting the way we played yesterday onto future games. This team will rise to the occasion.

It's not just yesterday. It's the second half against ND, the first three quarters against Troy, first three quarters against Maryland, the entire game against Clemson, parts of the Miami game, most of the NCSU game, and now this.

We have had stretches of terrible offense in just about every game.

Okay, you've pointed out that we have the ability to play poorly. I can only suppose that conversely we have the ability to play very well. Your own post outlines the lack of trend with regard to either of those facts.

We all know we won't win in Athens or Jax if we continue to play offensive football like we did yesterday. But we have also demonstrated the ability to play very well. That is why we are ACC Coastal Division Champions! We are just as capable of playing like we did to beat UVa, Miami, or NCS as we played yesterday.

I feel confident that Coach Gailey and his staff are working very hard to correct the deficiencies from yesterday. I also feel very confident that our fine group of SA's are likewise working hard to improve. We can only hope that it works and cheer like heck for them the rest of the way.

Some people will always be negative and nothing the rest of us say and do will ever change that. Nothing ever will be good enough for them. Even if we win the National Championship game, people like knox and longfordodd will be on here complaining, some people are unable to be happy. That is a shame because we are having a special season.

Simply stated, yesterday better have been our wake-up call. CG&Co better use that poor performance to refocus and motivate the players to work harder, prepare better, and execute better.
If that happens, as it should, we'll be in good shape. Get by Duke with no injuries, whoop the puppies, and ACC champs heading to Miami on Jan. 2. As other folks have posted, every team (even Ohio State & Michigan) have bad weeks from time to time. Truly good teams win those games they're supposed to (which we did) even when they don't play their best, and they step up in the big games (which we have with the exception of Clemson, we really were one bogus personal foul away from beating what has turned out to being a very stong ND team.)
Reggie has two (hopefully three with the Orange) to establish a legacy as a great Tech quarterback. He's thrown up some good numbers, but win a conference title, beat Georgia, and win the Orange Bowl, and all of a sudden he is in Tech history and we're talking about his great moments years from now, like Joe Hamilton and Shawn Jones.

We simply need to give Reggie the entire week off...including the game.

He cannot afford to sit out 2 of the 4 practices in a game week....take limited snaps in the other two...and expect to be in rhythm. I admire is courage and fight...it is simply not in him to prep that way.

:smirk: Don't go overboard. It would etch his lore quite positively though.
The best way to prepare for a great finish is to treat dook like a jv game. Reggie needs time to heal and rest. Calvin looked slow (for him) yesterday as well.
Choice also was exhausted yesterday. He has had what, over 60 carries in the last 2 weeks?

We need to shut it down for a week! Chan's NFL logic really needs to kick in this week.

I'd agree with that. It's obvious that if he's not near 100%, he's no good to anyone. Let him get as healthy as possible for UGAg and the ACCCG.
The only way we lose to Duke is if we give it to them, i.e., a bunch of interceptions and fumbles, which most likely would come from an unfocued/unprepared/unhealthy Reggie trying to force stuff. We should be able to beat Duke with anyone at QB and just running the ball all day and letting Tenuta and the D do their thing.

I think that you have articulated a brilliant strategy!

Give Reggie the entire week off except for shorts and shoulders throws to keep his arm and timing at work and then play Taylor against Duke and ONLY bring in Reggie if it looks in doubt.

Reggie needs the rest and Taylor needs the work so he will be more able to play in the event he's needed against the gagsters or in the ACCCG.

This is not going to happen and we all know it.

Joe Hamilton and Shawn Jones each beat Georgia twice. John Dewberry beat Georgia twice. If perchance he beats Georgia this season, then I will rate Reggie as a good quarteback, but not great. If he loses yet again to Georgia, then he is just another quarteback that played for Tech ( I'll give him a golf clap for surpassing Shawn Jones career numbers. And wasn't Jones only a 3 year starter?).

Paramedic ...

Shawn Jones was a 4 year starter but he did have a redshirt year prior. However, they did not play 12 game seasons or count bowl games in the totals in those days.

Let us not forget that Shawn Jones played in, and won, a National Championship Game!!

yep...the 1991 season has always been a mystery to me though. 1990 was a classic sports year for Georgia Tech!

the 1991 season has always been a mystery to me though.

Most of our o-line graduated in 1990 and one of the starters that didn't (can't recall who) was injured. We had neither great size nor experience in the 2-deep oline in '91.

1991 was a disappointment, but not a surprise. What was even a greater disappointment was the failure to capitalize on a national championship season to establish GT as a periennal national power.

our 4-year record following our national title was the worst 4-year record in the history of the NCAA by a team following a national title year. Thank God those days are behind us!

Mooney and the Center were the returning starting OL in 1991. Mooney was at the time considered our best lineman from the previous season anyway. We did have some new blood on the OL but they had been in the program. Wasn't 1991 the year with the William Bell incident and the stolen books?

Yeah, BOR, Mooney and Chevers(?) were good, but as you say, there was new blood and little quality depth.

William Bell went and got hisself suspended for the YEAR! (some programs would have made him sit out the Furman game). That hurt, too.
