I spoke with Joe Ham at the half and he is begging for Gailey to let him coach the QB's but to no avail. It is not the players, it is the coach.
Two questions as to this issue:
Do we have a "slot" for an additional coach under the ncaa rules?
Didn't Joe Ham "help" with rb last year or the year before?
I understand that a year or two ago Joe helped with rb, but at that time Joe was still in school himself. Now to be allowed to "coach" he must fall with in the specified number of coaches allowed by the ncaa, either as a "graduate assistant" (must be a student and no pay, I believe), or as a paid assistant coach. In addition the coaching he does must fit within the number of hours a week an SA can be involved in athletic related activities.
While I am by no stretch of the imagination a ccg supporter, I can understand why he would refuse an offer that might run afoul of ncaa regulations, or disrupt the schedules for practice, film review, etc, that he has established.
I would like to see Joe Ham's "play for the love of the game" spirit and attitude become a permanent part of our team. I think that Joe could to much to help that happen. But you just can't "walk on" as a coach under the ncaa rules. I hope that Joe finds a position in coaching, and finds it at GT. Further, Joe needs to expect to start at the bottom. I don't know that "Assistant Coach- QB's" is an entry level coaching position. As he may have learned with his experience with rb, there is much more to coaching than simply knowing how to do it yourself.
I expect him to apply for the next vacancy on the GT football assistant coaching staff. If he does, I hope he gets the job.
