Realistic Expectations?

If cpj is gone after this year, what are your expectations for the next coach? What is the expected time frame?

I assume everybody will give him time to get his players in. Depending on what offense he runs, I'm thinking it would be year three before we can judge him. Starting year three, I would want to compete for the division every year and be top 25 consistently with wins over the dwags two out of five or better.

I'm curious to know, what do y'all think is a realistic long term goal for a new coach.

My realistic expectation is that CPJ will be here next year. But he will have to offer someone big as sacrifice. And it won't be any of the defensive coaches.

If we keep defense as is with Woody and only install a new offense 2 years.

This is why I roll my eyes every time someone suggests some senior citizen like Briles. If there is one thing that will turn off recruits it is a new coach implementing a new system while planning his imminent retirement.

Edit: Good lord, there are already 2 posts chirping about Briles. You can't make this stuff up.

What he said. Defense is showing signs of improvement, but the offense is wildly inconsistent and that was the whole reason behind keeping him in the first place. If he can't provide concrete hope for a turnaround next year and in the future, I don't see how we can justify keeping him unless the budget is really that much of a factor.

Defense is showing signs of improvement, but it has had 2 49 point games.

Hence the improvement. We're still not good, but at least we're forcing turnovers and getting occasional stops. I'd say our D is average at this point, which is a big step up. We all knew we'd give up more big plays, but I'll gladly take that tradeoff.

Fair enough. I wasn't disagreeing, just putting up a reminder of how far we have to go.

I'll be happy with:

7-8 wins on average
Win half of vt, um, uga, clemson every year
Beat uga at least 1/3
Win the coastal race at least 1/4

Fwiw, cpj over the last 4:
~7
Vt 3/4
Uga 2/4
Miami 1/4
Clemson 0/4

I got tired of defending CPJ a few years ago.

I don't want a coach I will have to defend, such as Briles, for his entire career. He would be a huge distraction and another recruiting hurdle.

I wasn't really trying to start another thread on should we fire him or who the next coach should be so let me rephrase my question.

What are your realistic long term expectations for the program? I don't think any of us realistically expects us to turn into bama in the next five years but what do you expect the program to be for the next five or ten years?

The problem with the “he has to sacrifice a coach to stay” approach is what competent coach is going to want to be the replacement.

When you’re being forced to fire coaches to get another year, the writing is on the wall.

Unless there are monumental changes made on the academic level in support of athletics, Tech will forever be a flash in the pan program. Any expectations, regardless of coach, that can square that are unrealistic and held by someone who either isn't grounded in the current realities of the school and the college football world or enjoy just being a huge dickhead on a message board.

So, if you're not OK with 6-8 wins per year, a race for Coastal title every 4 years, and a magical holy-shit-that-was awesome-season every 10 years, stop watching Tech football for your liver's and emotional stability's sake.

We have got to finish at least 7-5 every year. That has to be the floor. 3 of the last 4 years have just been inexcusable and its not just about the records but how we get there. Late game collapses, gift touchdowns from turnovers, zero "clutchness", etc..... Its been brutal to be a fan and it is running many off.

6-8 wins per year is reasonable. I always consider 8 wins a "good" year. 8 wins seems like leagues away right now.
