CNNSI put out a really good piece here.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/andy_staples/01/20/recruiting/index.html?eref=T1

It does a really nice breakdown of where teams recruit from, how close the average hometown is to the school, etc.

USF wins at an average distance of 160 miles, but Texas is the most impressive with the second highest total wins and an average distance of just 191 miles.

Stanford loses in all kinds of ways. They have the 5th lowest win total, and an average distance of over 1300 miles and under 5% of people coming from within 200 miles.

Helps one understand why Nebraska has taken a tumble. They do not have as many corn fed linemen in state as before.

Great stuff

Thanks for the link. I noticed a trend in the GT data that those from far away are more likely to leave the program. It's not surprising, but it was interesting to see it on a map.

I never thought about the impact of the proliferation of televised college football games over the last 15 years. Before there were two ESPNs, it was a huge deal to be an old powerhouse. Michigan, ND, Nebraska, etc. were the only schools on TV week in and week out. Tommie Frazier, for example, was from Bradenton, FL.
