Recruiting if Gailey is fired

Re: Unbelievable

I also would point out that while it is technically unknown, it is extremely probable that recruiting would get worse.

Why? Lots of coaches can recruit, why would you assume we wouldn't get one? We recruited well under O'Leary, we even recruited well under Lewis (he just didn't know what to do with them), we recruited well under both Ross and Curry.

Ill try.

Last year's class was among the best GT classes ever. None of the coaches you mention put together back to back classes in that league IMHO. We are getting close to a second stellar class in a row.

Sure we can believe that great coaches who recruit great are waiting for Rad to call, but we have extensive historical evidence that we are above our 52 year moving average when it comes to recruiting.

Granted, recruiting rankings are imprecise. However the wierd fact that GT seems to be the stronger team at the end of the game and the fact that our STs look better than the competition for a change makes it appear that we have deeper quality talent despite fewer scholarships.

I am interested to see how we do against VT.

Poor Gailey never gets any credit. All the problems are pointed at him and all the successes pointed at some assistant coach. Wake up people, Gailey is the final and most important part of recruiting when considering coaches.

Ted Roof said that Gailey was incredible in the recruiting arena. Tech is not an easy place to find recruits, it clearly took him a few years to figure it out.

OR did it? This years class may have more NFL draft choices then any other in the history of Tech football. Maybe Gailey got us three of our best classes ever.

It would be a loss to recruiting if we got rid of Chan and considering we are coming off probation and needing a slew of players, it could be a real painful loss.

My dad wants us to get Bill Cowher. I think if we got him then our recruiting would not suffer.

:)

But how many coaches have incredible recruiting classes their first year? Take out the football factories in any analysis because places like USC, Texas, etc. could have Ted Bundy as the HC and still recruit in the top 25.

Why would any big name coach want a job at a second tier BCS school that expects championships every year? We are 1 year removed from the ACCCG and a New Year's Day bowl and will make another this year if we can beat UNC and Duke. Chan's time might come, but it won't be this year, so the whole point of this is moot.

I also find it ironic that the same people who didn't blame O'Leary for Joe Burns running out of bounds against Maryland, now blame Gailey for a dropped punt vs. UVA and a holding call against a SENIOR OL against UMD. This whole thread is purely speculation.

Gailey has had 1 good year of recruiting, lets be realistic here guys, we're not reeling in blue chippers and its not like Chan can claim credit for Calvin (academics and his mom got him) or Choice...the best two offensive players in the Gailey era.

You are right...lets be realistic. Recruiting is about trending and it is trending up...and is the healthiest it has ever been in the program. We were top 20 last year...and stand a good shot again this year. 2009 is already looking strong from an activity standpoint.

However, a lot of our own "fans" and alumni are trying to damage it. Regardless of what you think about the coach...there are proper ways to handle it to minimize publicity and not impact the programs recruiting.

Recruiting is going very well.

I don't care for chan as much as the next guy...but how can you say he doesn't get credit for Choice or CJ?

Choice almost came here when we recruited him, and chose OK...then transferred back...Thats like saying Carr gets no credit for landing Threet; or Ross no credit for getting Dorsey Levens. Of course they get credit, they made an impression on the kid and he chose to go elsewhere, and chose to come back based on what they knew. Choice could have gone to Athens too...but didn't.

And CJ..my gosh...who gets the credit then? Do you really believe CJ's mom forced him to go to tech? CJ made his own decision, his parents guided him; but it was his call and Chan's regime has to get that credit.

Like I said...I don't care for chan as much as the next guy, but he has done SOME good things. Not everything he has done good were accidents.

Coupla Points

1. Pay attention to what Redtech says.

2. I don't put AJ in the category of "potential defections due to coaching uncertainty." My read is there are some family dynamics going on there - and UF told someone something new. I would not be surprised if AJ lands here, but he's definitely in play.

3. Doing and saying things that might hurt recruiting for the school you say you support is the height of selfishness.

AMEN!!!!!!!!

To quote Mark Richt..."How do you look a mom in her eyes and tell her that her son's future isn't in academics?" parapharased, but close to verbatim. I think you underestimate the persuasive powers of a strong woman/mother, especially one that gives academics top priority.

Choice's family issues put him at GT, period. I guess I can give Chan credit for swaying Choice away from Morehouse! ha.

My understanding was that we did not recruit Choice out of HS and definitely did not offer despite him having great deal of interest in GT.

It would probably improve recruiting alot.
Dont think so, our recruits are looking for solid coaching and a program that will be here 4 yrs from now. Chan is a solid overall coach -- good development of overall player group --QB excepted,
but most competitors have the same issue at QB--FSU, Miami, to name 2 biggies.

Two ?? for MaconGTfan:

If it was "all about academics" for the Johnson family, why didn't CJ go to UNC? UVA? Duke? Stanford? Boston College? Wake? I believe all those schools were recruiting him too. GT worked hard to recruit Calvin, and we won--period.

Are you aware of the particular family issue which brought TC back to Georgia? His mom, the sole caretaker of his grandmother, broke her ankle/leg and there was no one to handle things in the household. Guess what? TC could've resolved those issues in 4-6 weeks and gone ANYWHERE he wanted. He was familiar with our staff from his high school recruitment, and it was, again, our staff which reeled him in.

In my book, you get no credit for being a GT fan if you have to look that deep into your fertile imagination for reasons to diss our coaches.
