Our newest breakdown on recruiting by state:
Alabama 4
Colorado 1
Florida 3
Georgia 6
Pennsylvania 1
Sou Carolina 2
Texas 1

18

I like to see more from Florida.

I guess at this point the state might be oversaturated with coaches. But I am very surprised by the Alabama number. Perhaps the luster has faded in Tuscaloosa. (And Auburn is probably 60%+ barely qualified Georgia SAs)

O-line

I have noticed Chan has recruited much smaller O-lineman(click link). IMO, our O-line has not measured up to the O-lines under O'Leary. All ACC selections was a norm during these years. Perhaps, Chan is recruiting a smaller/quicker O-line to compensate for speedy DEs.

These guys are small for an O-line (255, 260, 275lbs). O-line is an area that needs to be addressed.

Re: O-line

I agree that O-line needs to bee addressed...and it has...with 5 OL recruits. The kids are tall, and have room to add weight. They may bee in the 250-270 range now, but after a redshirt year of weights and conditioning they will hopefully bee the perfect combo of size and quickness needed to combat speedy DE's. None of our OL recruits are expected to play in 2005.

Many of the 300lb High School OL are fat....not muscle.

Re: O-line

Agreed....O-Line is being addressed. We have never landed the highly recruited OL prospects at any time during the past 15 years...Olivea being the most frustrating recruiting story. However, if there is one position you can grow them this is it.

The upper-classman OL's that were left the past couple of years simply have not had the talent of years past. It is my understanding that our younger OL's are actually more skilled...both in agility and technique. However, they have to continue to build weight and strength.

I think in the long run you are far better off finding the late growers as opposed to the big fat kids that have been 290 lbs. since 9th grade. Then you get a kid had his knees, etc. develop ahead of the weight...which makes them more agile as they add weight.

I have head nothing but great things about McManus, Gardner, Lonowski, and AJ Smith...we saw how good Rhodes was doing by year end as a freshman...and I love these OL recruits we have this year.

Heck...Voss was a WIDE RECEIVER just 3 years ago!....and now he is a 6-4, 290 OL per his coach. A beat writer that covers the Catholic League up there said he is the best OL in that area hands down...despite two other kids getting far more press and recruitment.

I think that things look so good now on the OL that we should expect a kid or two to transfer out over the next 1-2 years and the depth chart shakes out. I do not want that to happen....but you know how kids are these days.

Re: O-line

Another high quality post from hiveredtech.

We have been behind the curve on OL for 13 years. Lewis only recruited one HS OL in his time at GT--and that guy flunked out. We depended on coverted TEs, etc., but had no depth when O'Leary came in.

O'Leary was always looking for the 6'5 300 pounder (Ralph wanted big body pass blockers). He never found them in quantity. We got behind the curve in terms of depth, and we are still there today.

Bill Curry understood that we have to recruit OL prospects and grow them. This staff understands that as well. For the first time in years, we may be in position to have OL depth. However, don't expect any of these kids to contribute before 2007, and if they do, it is only because we are so sorely lacking in depth. The same comment applies to last year's OL recruits.

This staff has done a great job of playing the very difficult hand that has been dealt to them in recruiting. That is a discussion for another thread on another day.

jacket-up

you are mistaken in the quality of the O linemen bought in by GOL.As late as '01 he got
-Nate Dorsey-All ACC lineman
-Brad Honeycutt- rated 19 best OL in TExas and Now our BEST OL (and biggest)
-Kyle Wallace-Atl TD club OFF lineman of yr! a 3 yr starter
-Andy Tidwell-Neal -All-state in fball and wrestling, probably our best lineman last yr
oh yeah -ALL WERE 280lb ( and OVER) WHEN signed
compare them to the guys now, anyway you want

The 6 OL we have committed aren't going to see a single down of college football this year, so it's irrelevant. They're gonna put on a lot of weight and be ready in the future.

Re: jacket-up

not true AlaGold...I love these kids but lets face some facts...they were not highly recruited.

Tidwell-Neal did not get an offer from Minnesota.
Honeycutt did not get offers from Texas or Texas A&M
Kyle Wallace was a solid pickup...but not a highly sought-after recruit outside of in-state schools plus an out-of-state or two.
Nat Dorsey was one of those kids that was under the radar until late in recruiting then picked up a lot of steam...he was probably the "biggest name" recruit out of high school on the OL for the past 15 years.

We have always missed on the Shane Olivea's, Cosey Coleman's, and several big-name OL's from the northeast.

The GOOD news is that if you get a kid that is agile, young, and growing....you can easily develop solid OL's. I LOVE the kids we have that are freshmen and sophomores...as well as the new ones coming in the fall.

kinda like Hargrove was a QB when he came

now, he is one of the most agile and quick - but ferociously strong - DEs in the NFL

he added most of the weight he gained since HS, and he only had a few years

Re: kinda like Hargrove was a QB when he came

WOW! Imagine that.. ;)

Re: kinda like Hargrove was a QB when he came

I like the approach of six line recruits in the class - then let competition in the weight room and practice field reveal the guys that can play well for us down the road. This is better than the last few classes that brought in a smaller number of OL, even if they may have a higher rating. Without depth in this area injuries or a player not developing will kill you. I am pleased with this area of recruiting this year.

hivertech

I'll bet they ('01)were as highly sought as these new guys.Just between Dorsey and Wallace ,there probably were more honors and offers than maybe the whole group now.
these new guys might be ok but I'll bet there won't be any going pro EARLY.

Learn how to read

Let me give you a clue:

My post was about lack of depth.

Does that help?

Your post says that he signed four good linemen. Seems like you agree with me since it takes five to start, and he was at GT how many years? Since you can't read, maybe you can do the math.

Jacket

you are right about GOL and depth but you are not going to get depth in one yr.Also depth means nothing if you don't have first liners that are capable which may be the situation this yr.
btw-Here is a piece of math for you,the number of Off linemen signed in CGs first class,ONE.The number left-ZERO.

Re: Jacket

So you're going to hold that against him? Because the man wanted to honor his contract with Miami? Is that the personal agenada you have against CCG? Because he didn't leave Miami the day he accepted the GT job?

Re: Jacket

I couldn't care less about the Dolphins.I care about Tech and our needs. We needed more than one OLineman in that class and we didn't get them. That is the bottom line. Our offense(which hadn't been that strong anyway) will suffer this fall because of that situation 3 yrs ago.
I'm glad that we have a coach with integrity but that is not going to open any holes this Fall.

[/ QUOTE ]The sad part of this is that an extra month of recruiting probably wouldn't have produced many (if any) more OLs anyway.

Most coaches honor their commitments (Urban Meyer, Charlie Weiss - this year), I would hope that the soon-to-be coach for GT (Chan - then) would honor his. Truth be told, it was flunkgate and some weird injuries (Gathers, Phillips) that hurt us more than anything.

Important class

Every recruit is pivotal with the self-imposed loss of schollys in '05 and '06. Seems like Chan and crew are keeping this in mind with this class. I like the move of recruiting taller WRs -- all over 6'1". I hope the TE gets more involved this fall -- can do wonders for an inconsistent QB (like Ball).
