Referees

ACC refs: "Goodness. Wouldn't want it to look like we were favoring the ACC team! Better give uga the benefit of the doubt here."

SEC refs: "Wreck Tech!"

ACC refs sure have screwed us more often than not over the years against UGAg
Pure incompetence, not bias. Todd should definitely insist that Big or Pac-10 officials do this game every year.

There shouldn't be conference refs. There should be Power 5 Refs. One pool to draw from for all conferences.

How can they do the GT/uga game if they have their own conference games to officiate?

I referee lacrosse, both high school and NCAA though I only do DII and DIII for NCAA. The NCAA refs up until now have been just that, NCAA refs. We are under an organization known as NILOA and we have been assigned individually to games for quite some time. I like it, it seems to work well and I get to call games with guys from all over.

There have been rumblings as of late that we will be going to conference assigning in the next year or so. I'm not thrilled not only because we avoided the "conference bias" perceived or real but also due to the fact that you get shoehorned into a specific group of colleges. For football, SEC and ACC schools share the same territory, is there some reason why a ref from one conference can't call a game 70 miles from a game that he can? It limits the ref severely from a business/personal perspective.

I think it also allows conferences too much power to "blacklist" a crew or an official from a certain site.

Why would there be any bias with conference refs? It's not like there's millions of dollars on the line, after all it's only amateur sports.

I would think each conference has more than one extra crew available. As long as it's scheduled ahead of time, the other 3 P-5s could muster up a crew.
