Tech boasts successful people. Tech boasts a large black enrollment and graduation rates. Tech helped open up segregation in southern football.

Atlanta has the richest, most successful black people in the country (or tied with DC). Atlanta has a large black population. Tech is located in the middle of Atlanta.

(UGA never graduated any of their black football players and really has a much poorer record with blacks.)

So why don't we get any walk up black fans to our football games?

Despite all that you mentioned, there are more UGA fans among them just like every other community in GA.

1. B/c so few of us go to big colleges.

2. The HBCU influence in African-American society is still huge.

Plus the folks back in the neighborhoods are uber focused on NFL/NBA...remember all those 2 Live Stew complaints about their summer conversations.

That number that Tech and I are very proud of producing the most African-American and Hispanic Engineers is still like less than 200-300 a year.

Go look at the statistics, minority populations at flagship universities is in the 5-15% range. Far less than the general population.

If I had more time, I'd dig up the numbers.

It's all about "Swagger" and "Street Cred" amongst much of the younger urban black community and Tech really has very little in that regard. (not meant to be insulting in any way, just my toughts)

Plus, whether you're black or white, you still want to pull for a winning team and UGA tends to win more. If Moorehouse had a football team it would be different.

I also agree with the NBA/NFL comment.

Because they have other things to do just like the whites, Asians, Indians, Hispanics, and all those godforsaken carpetbagging Northerners.

grr..
i just lost a huge post..
anyway here are the numbers.

at GT:
Fall 2008,
12,973 total undergrads
898 black

at UGA, fall 2007
25,335 total undergrads
1516 black

that leads to less 200 graduating per year.
only 2/3 of those will become ST holders/fans.

Waco needs to respond to this thread.
Is he the official "Black Tech Fan?";)

That I can think of, only Miami and Louisville have large minority fanbases in the BCS Conferences.

Miami due to their success in the 80's.
Louisville has commuter school roots, and has cultivated a more urban atmosphere that everyone particpates in.

Tech is very old school, main line, classic collegiate.
I think in this market we should probably differentiate ourselves that way.

More bands, no permanent ads, no gimmick competitions, move to Cheerleaders into the endzones during timeouts.

I'm Negro and I approve this message.:D

I'd like to know how many people actually live in the city, did not go to college in Georgia, and yet are fans of either Tech/U[sic]GA as opposed to the Falcons or not being a football fan. My guess would be the number is very low, regardless of race. Of course, I'm relatively positive there are no statistics like this.

DRad has definitely made some adjustments to the marketing to start reflecting that market. And GTg8er, I'd vote you as the offcial Black Tech Fan or "White and Gold Negro" anytime... can I get that last one put on a shirt for you?

I for one can say that I am from Marietta, did not attend my undergrad in Georgia (went to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology), and had no plans to attend grad school until my senior year of college. Yet I would regularly be caught screaming at the television during GT football/basketball (and sometimes baseball...freakin' NCAA tourney) games.

I meant the actual city of Atlanta, not the suburbs.

Honestly, I think it all goes back to the feeling by non-GT alums of elitism in the GT community.
