As a current Tech student in the business school, I'm around many of the football players. The common sentiment shared by me and every single other student I've spoken with is that Reggie Ball is a poor and classless student.
I've had classes with him, too. In my IT course last Spring, barely anyone knew he was in our class until he showed up for the final on the very last day. Surprise, surprise.
In our business calculus class, he showed up to 1/3 of the lectures. When he did show up, he'd consistently walk in ten minutes late, throw his headphones over his ears, and leave 10 minutes early won a dime. Apparently, this was the second time he's taken this course, too. One time he walked in late, sat right in front of me and let his head bob within inches of my pen in a very cramped Skiles classroom. Yes, he left early, but not until he took a few gummy bears that he was eating and threw them at some football players sitting in the front row of the classroom trying to take notes. He left the room when he ran out of bears.
Sure, he's just goofing around, but I don't have to be married with children to know that this behavior is totally unacceptable. A friend of mine spoke of his loud headphones during this last semester in an economics course.
There's a widely shared perception that Ball isn't very friendly to the campus community. I've heard far more negative than positive stories of students who've tried to engage Reggie Ball, and he basically gives them a cold shoulder. I'm sure there are good interactions here and there, but I assure you that the bad far outweights the good.
IMO, he doesn't deserve to start. This is almost like poetic justice finally prevailing. He's not a guy that I believe you should feel too sorry for. I hope he gets his act together academically because he won't make much money playing football. All of my peers, and I'd guess a vast majority of Tech students, are flat out happy that he's done. We're sick of him.
