Reggie To Safety Next Year

No question, it's a chicken or the egg kind of thing. Is it Reggie or is it the young OL, for example.

I can confidently say that I've finally made my mind up and I'm pretty sure Chan has too. That is by season's end, Chan just gave up teaching Reggie again and just called plays around what Reggie offered. Unfortunately, in this day and age, Reggie doesn't offer that much.

There were a couple of moments however that our OL didn't protect Reggie (or anybody else). The VPI game was ugly and this last game we kept getting hammered up the gut too. VPI was stronger than us, Utah was strong, but the wet field really helped them on the line.

The rest of the games we protected fine, except for outside pressure caused almost always by Reggie backing up too far. By the third game, he never ever ever stepped up into the pocket (he definitely did in the Auburn game and I thought we had us a player). His passing got worse and worse. He just isn't the man, and I don't think it's all Chan's fault.

If Garner or somebody else is not ready to play this Fall, then Chan must be fired because QB play is that important.

I am not blaming Reggie for the San Fran joke. BUT, you must remember that teammates get tired of not scoring any points. Like it or not, it wears on teams.

We just have to disagree. There are numerous problems with the passing game at GT. The OL, the NFL mentality, lack of QB development, poor WR route running, not challenging the entire field, etc.

Replacing Reggie with Garner is not a panacea. Reggie is not all-ACC material, but he is not the SOLE reason that GT is 11th in the ACC in passing efficiency ahead of only Duke, who is LAST IN THE NATION.

Sorry, but it is incredibly illogical to believe that Reggie is the SOLE reason that the passing numbers are so bad. If we were talking about the difference between 8th in the conference and 5th in the conference, I might agree with you, but Reggie's ability or lack thereof does not explain why a team with Calvin Johnson is the number 11 passing efficiency team--and the other passing numbers for this team are not a lot better.

Chan Gailey does not understand the college passing game. It is different from the NFL, as demonstrated by Steve Spurrier not succceeding in the NFL and Ralph Friedgen prefering the college passing game. Gailey is too arrogant and stubborn to admit that the doesn't know all there is to know about offense, and this stubborness is hurting GT.

Chan Gailey is a good head coach, but he needs a top notch COLLEGE passing game coach. Unless he hires one, AND LETS HIM COACH, we will be having this discussion until Gailey is terminated, retires, resigns or dies.

I think CG has proven to everybody that he has no interest in delegating anything of any importance.
His naming P Nix as offensive coordinator but without any responsibility or authority was Chan's way of saying "Stick it".
Based on your opinions, why do you feel he is a good head coach?

I agree with a lot of what you say jacketup, but my main problem with Reggie is watching him miss open receivers time after time when he's not under pressure. I just don't think he can get the ball where he wants it. With all of the other issues you point to, not being accurate makes them all that much worse. I don't know that any of our other QBs are the answer, but as bad as Tech has been some years the last time before last year that our team completion percentage was below .500 was 1987. That was Ross' first team, that finished 2-9 with both wins against D-1AA teams. Now we've done it two years in a row.

Our pass protection has sucked since Coach D has arrived. It is very hard for a QB to worry about his mechanics when he is running for his life on just about every passing play. Reggie does not step up into the pocket because he has no confidence in the O-Line to protect him. A lot of the problems that Reggie has are because he anticipates poor pass protection and getting hit hard on every passing play because that has been the norm.

If we were to run the option just 5-8 times per game, it would make opposing defenses think side-to-side and open up passing lanes for Reggie to throw across the middle of the field. It would also help pass protection by making the opposition less likely to blitz and less aggressive by making them think about assignments instead of beating up people.

I am not saying we become Navy or anything, but it seems like we have the personnel to run the option and that the threat of the option would open up other opportunities in the passing game.

I'm tired of folks blaming Reggie's poor play on Gailey's system. Reggie misses guys that are wide open! He never ever hits wide outs in stride. I want to see a pure passer run this offense.

Reggie Ball is better than any of our other QBs at finding the open reciever and is our most consistently accurate passer.

Why does Utah's back-up QB in only his second start ever look so much better than our best QB that has started just about every game for 3 years?

Is it our inability to recruit a good QB, poor coaching, the system, or some combination of the three?

You tell me, because one thing is for sure our offense stinks.

What makes you say this?

Well, not a commentary on our QBs, but Utah's backup is actually a JC who played 2 years after HS. That not only gave him more live experience than any of our backups but also gave college coaches a better read on what he can do.

That obviously is why he plays.
RB can look very good at the start of games or halves, or when playing with a lead. It's when adversity faces him that he snaps. It has been all downhill after he gets rattled. Whatever coaching he has received and retained flies out the window when he/we need composure the most.
I'm afraid he is a nervous wreck.

It's time to find out if we have a gamer.

I have to disagree again regarding the pass protection. Our OL gave up a total of less than 10 sacks the whole year! Now certainly one could give some credit to Reggie's running ability, BUT there are so many quarterbacks that sit in there and take 30 sacks a season, plus a whole lot more hits. If Reggie is worried about getting hit, he shouldn't be the quarterback, period. But one hit and he's done for the season, no doubt about that. He's too short to be an effective pocket quarterback, but Chan is running that system. Fine, put in someone else, because Reggie just isn't getting it done. I think I could throw for 50% completion rate.
