Hard to think about after a loss to them, but I wonder if a Miami resurgence isn't good for us indirectly.

Listen to the talking heads reviewing our game. They hardly mentioned GT as though our performance was bad (As is hte focus on this board.) They focus on how GOOD Miami is or may be. Are they back? How do they compare to the teams regularly competing for MNCs? Etc.

Any other ACC school coming off a losing record with a few wins to start the season would hardly be worth notice. But Miami gets the benefit of the positive bias. The sports media WANTS Miami to be good.

For the perception of the ACC to improve we need a few teams with national respect. And it would take years for any school other than Miami, FSU, or VT to gain that respect.

If Miami comes back, maybe the ACC will get press for something other than how weak it has become. The PAC-10 has been very weak several years but since USC was strong it didn't suffer as much in national perception.

It is very hard for me to root for Miami. But I can't help but think that it is better for the ACC long term and therefore better for us if they do well.

For what it's worth, I still don't think Miami is "back." This scenario reminds me a lot of Miami last year, except GT and VT are reversed. We'll see what happens to them next week. If they beat VT, I'll become a believer.

I think it's very good for the ACC if, in fact, they're back.

If they are back, it is great for the ACC. If they rip through the rest of the season like they blew through us just to get crushed in the Orange Bowl by some BCS conference runner-up, then it's not so great.

Here's hoping that VPI takes them down and then they beat Oklahoma. The ACC needs that more than to give them the conference through scheduling, etc.

Clemson looked good today so good for us.

Florida State is whipping a higher ranked BYU team on the road which is good.

V Tech was lucky to beat Nebraska today but did. I don't think they beat Miama next week.

Yes, its good for the ACC and us now if Miami does well. But MTSU beat UMd today I believe.

Sorry but I still do't think Miami is back. Anybody gets pressure on that Qb and he will start throwing it to cb's all day. It's easy to look like a Heisman QB when you have 7-10 secs to read and react. Food for thought... our Dline isnt very outstanding as we all know and FSU's aint great either. They were starting a DE that went about 260 who i believe was a walk on from a Tall. area college. Clemson's DL will eat Jacory's lunch and then make him buy them more. We walked into a perfect storm Thurs with a busted rowe boat and half a paddle.

Based on what evidence do you say he will start throwing it to CB's? He might, I just wonder how you came to that conclusion. FSU looking pretty good at the moment at BYU.

I think your words here are true. Certainly that passing offense has been made to look unstoppable from the two feeble defenses it has faced. I have to believe that VT will put pressure on the QB and it will be a much different game, with a frustrated and confused Miami offense.

I guess we won't know till he gets hit. Maybe we will be lucky enough to find out next week.

I hate hearing the U being back is good for the ACC. If you really hear the message in what they are saying is that the media would prefer Miami and FSU successful in the ACC as opposed to Ga Tech or a Wake Forest or Boston College.

A great Miami program is good for the ACC. It is bad for GT. Did you enjoy the last four years beating a down Miami program more or getting whipped by the Canes this year? Why are we glad they're back? It's at our expense.

My perception is that the national media probably has this pecking order of preference in the ACC:
FSU
Miami
Va Tech
UNC
Clemson
Ga Tech
NC State, UVA, Md, BC - all about even Duke, Wake - at the bottom

But otoh, if they handle VT, then they are back. From what I've seen of VT so far this season, I think Miami handles them fairly easily.

Well, that's the point. You may hate to hear it but it is reality.

BC or Wake can have the same record and yet not get the same attention for the conference. And if our conference gets positive attention then that is good for us.

I'd hate to win the ACC and have it mean as much as winning Conference USA. We need the perception of the ACC to be better because the polls determine the BCS order and the polls are all perception.

The media doesn't think the ACC is any good unless one of those key programs is good. They'll overlook the bottom feeders in a conference as long as it has a few top programs that they recognize and perceive as quality.

It takes YEARS of great performance to change perceptions and think of a program as a top program. But once you have that perception it also takes years to lose it. If UVA or Duke has a great year, then it will be an oddity. If FSU has that same year then it gets much more attention.

I want GT to do well, obviously. But it will be better for us (in the eyes of the voting press and coaches) if we do well against an FSU team that is strong than if we do well against a barely bowl eligible FSU.

Unfair? You bet!

But, until we have a playoff, perception is critical to the success of the program. And we haven't been good enough long enough to carry our own cachet.

I'd rather Miami stay a ****ty team.
It'd be nice to win the ACC and have that be a big deal to the nation, but first you have to be able to win the ****ing ACC!!
What if Miami comes "back" and starts getting recruits like those that choke the bench at Florida?
I can't wish for the improvement of our conference competition until we prove we can consistently BEAT that competition.
