And it was frustrating watching some of the games - specifically the UNC game. I was out of town that weekend and never got to see it live. Fortunately the Internet exists to feed me content at my command so I was able to finally get around to watching it.
Boston College: You could tell we weren't really comfortable with the offense yet. We squeaked out a win but generally speaking we got lucky. OL was outmatched. Josh won this game for us.
Virginia Tech: VT did a pretty good job shutting down the dive and pitch. Josh racked up huge yardage this game. Honestly, we should have won this game. Too many errors and of course the phantom call.
UNC: Did a good job blowing up the OL, just seemingly always there in the backfield. Dwyer seemed to be a non-factor, same with the pitches. Again, turnovers were the knife in the back here - the game was pretty close up until Roddy's muffed punt return. Another thing, it seemed like in the 3rd quarter CPJ gave up on the option and tried to test their secondary. Though, most of the time, Josh would end up scrambling in the backfield, poorly throwing the ball off one foot which ended up being received 1/4 times. I now also see why people were upset with Butch Davis from this game. WTF, dude? Throw for it on 4 and 1 for a TD. Then try to throw another 4 and 1 TD with just a few minutes left in the game? It also seemed like we got out played on special teams in this game. Our punts wouldn't go nearly as far, or when trying to pooch it, they'd go into the end zone.
Do y'all think we'll have these same problems this year? I'd like to think that these teams (specifically VT and UNC) think they've got us figured out. And generally speaking, taking away the dive will go a long way if you've got the backers to also take away the pitch. If they're going to pick their poison and let Josh beat them, I'm hoping the OL can hold together and allow some passes out of Josh - like the TD pass play to Roddy in the VT game. That play looked effortless, I don't know why we don't run that play more often.
