A couple of uneducated observations (LINK if you haven't seen it in a while and can stand to watch it)

  • Defense was terribly out of position at the worst possible times. Gallman's TD on the 3rd play of the game was a perfect example of this. Lots of guys slipping and falling and terrible tackling form to boot.
  • Easily the worst OL performance I've seen from a Tech team. Yes, Clemson's defense was/is loaded with NFL talent, but our guys had little "want to" or mental wherewithal to block anyone. I can only hope that CPJ & co are making our OL watch this tape over and over this week.
  • Forgot we had one of our precious bad long snaps in this game. Thankfully it only led to a safety (should have been a Clemson TD).
  • With all of that in mind, we still *only* lost by 19. IIRC, that was Clemson's smallest MOV of their regular season games.
  • Passing game was big since Tigers sold out to stop the run. Good call on their part given the conditions. It only burned them twice (long TDs to Juene and Lynch). Shouldn't be rain on Thursday night to help them out this time though.
Anyone else notice anything systematically bad?

Dabo took his foot off the gas when up by 30. It wasn't as close as the final score. But I like our chances this year. I fully expect a win and are catching them at the perfect time in the schedule.

There is a talent discrepancy, but we've beaten talented teams before.
IMO, it is less than the talent discrepancy from GT to UGAg. Realistically, UGAg should never ever lose to GT. Clemson has some of those overrated South Carolina players on the team.

I dunno, in an apples to apples comparison I'd say Clemson did a lot better against equal competition than UGA.

That's hard to evaluate other than the head to head competition. At QB, Clemson is better than UGA, but they're also better than pretty much everyone else by a wide margin. I think it's a wash at running back. WR, I think Clemson might not be "star" wise better, but certainly does more than Georgia does. That 2 star walk on WR was making Bamas 5 star DB look silly... Georgia likely has better talent on the line, but it's poorly coached even now under Smart. On defense, I think Clemson is better all around talent wise and execution wise.

That said, there are a lot of variables at play. Clemson runs an odd system that likely utilizes and emphasizes the talent they have better. Additionally, it causes its opponents to press, which has a positive affect on the defense... we'll find out soon enough. Hoping to "dethrone" both of them this year.

Clemson's coaching staff is better than Georgia's by a decent margin.
A few years ago I would have laughed at this comment, but Dabo has surrounded himself with an incredible staff and great talent. He's perfect for who and what Clemson is. The results speak for themselves. I agree whole heartedly. They're a reverse Alabama, but every bit as effective.

Clemson has played us pretty well the last 3 or 4 years defensively which makes sense given the talent they've had on D. They seem to really sell out on creating negative plays which puts us behind the chains a lot but also results in some huge offensive plays - think we have 4 or 5 plays of 50+ yards against them the last two years despite them holding our point totals down. They can get away with this because their offense is potent enough to overcome those big plays with the elevated number of possessions they get due to our shorter-than-normal possession length (be they one play, 50+ yard TD or 3-and-out).

It's always a fun matchup with the opposing philosophies of up-tempo and clock-control. 2011 was a perfect example of their style killing them. They couldn't sustain drives and we were death marching their defense into submission. But the danger is if our offense has a few three-and-outs, suddenly that up-tempo offense is magnified on a tired defense.

Interesting that Watson has been so pedestrian this year. Barely over 50% completion percentage for an offense that throws a lot of high percentage screens/short passes. If Watson isn't completing passes we could get up over 35 minutes possession which is exactly what we want in this game. Gotta create some turnovers and bust a few big plays on offense.

Clemson is doing a encore this Thursday at 730 for all the nerds that missed the curb stomping from last year.

watched the highlights last night. just the acc network short one. looks like one of our worst team games in the acc under cpj.

Clemson was really good last season, but let's not give them too much credit. We were missing tackles, forgetting who to block, dropping passes, and everything else we could think to öööö up. Pants shitting L. Around. I don't know if our guys were starstruck or what, but they made some really ridiculous mistakes. Clemson was literally firing their safeties into the backfield at the snap, and we couldn't block even for like 2 seconds to get a pass off because somebody always seemed to forget who their man was. On the rare occasion that we held blocks, we got a long TD pass out of it.

Clemson has more talent than GT and should theoretically win, but I would not be surprised if GT pulls it off. We've got plenty of talent and have done it time and time again in BDS.

Not too worried. Last year was a fluke. Clemson played arguably their best game of the year; while we arguably played our worst game of the year. We would beat them 8 times out of 10. They got lucky, plain and simple. This Thursday will be payback.
