Well it seemed like the natural thing to do....I like to entertain & the UGA fans like to be entertained so I thought I would just bring the circus to Athens... I mean I have more money than I will ever need & an instant customer base....I will wrestle gators, put a bee hive on my head...all while wearing a black jersey...

Wish we had that Circus at the Flats.

I would not want what they have at all. Too many embarrassing off-the-field incidents happen on a regular basis there.

I would rather go 0-12 each year and have a clean program than go 12-0 and have two off-field legal incidents each year. Heck...UGA has 5+ each year!

...hmm

--I'm thinking.

Two off-field incidents per year?

12-0?

Give me a couple of misdemeanors per year --throw in a minor felony every fifth year or so and I'm in ---gimme the 12-0. ;)

I like it...we could have a demerit system.

Driving with a suspended license- 1 point
Drunk and disorderly- 2 points
Credit card fraud- 2 points
Accepting stolen goods- 2 points
Possession of illegal substance- 3 points
Assault with a deadly weapon- 3 points
DUI- 4 points
Rape- 4 points
Murder- 5 points and a harsh one game suspension

What am I missing for the typical UGA athlete? (other than the murder charge...and I believe all of the recent rapes have happened at Clemson).

I was always taught by my coaches to "Act like you've been there before" to go about your business and just do like you've been taught & always represent your program well.

exactly...I could never cheer for them because of what they represent...or do not represent...whichever. Same reason I cannot stand LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, Clemson, FSU, VaTech, and Miami.

that's exactly what's wrong with our friggin fanbase

So you are saying the only way GT can expect to be a successful program is to give into the idea that you have to build your team/program around athletes that can't keep it together off the field. Simple enough

I grew up a Tech fan...my father is a Tech grad. I started going to GT games in 1972. I went to GT not because I was a GT sports fan...I can be a fan of anyone without going to their school...but because I wanted an education that would reflect all of the things that the Georgia Institute of Technology stands for.

Although I am a sports hound....involved heavily in them every day of my life...I realize that in the end the quality of the institute, the education...and how our school is viewed in terms of its quality of its students in both intellect and behavior is far more important than than the W's and L's.

This is consistent with the coaches and AD's of our past. I was a student-athlete at GT and my coach said that same thing. The coaches while I was there in all sports always emphasized doing all that we could to prepare ourselves to win...but more importantly, W or L, to represent GT with class and realize that we were part of something much bigger than just a sporting event.

The legacy that Georgia Tech continues to leave is one that turns out top notch students that contribute heavily to the world economy. That will be remembered long after the W/L record in 2007.

We like to joke with fellow fans about Notre Dame's on-field performance the past few years...but they will always receive respect as a school because for the most part their student-athletes are representative of the school...just like Stanford, Wake Forest, Vandy, Duke, Purdue, Northwestern, etc.

Does this mean we cannot win or that winning is not important? Does this have anything to do with who is or who is not our coach? No...of course not.

This simply reiterates that there is no way I would sell out like UGA does for the sake of 10 wins in a season. I would rather win 10 games without bending the rules or the spirit of the rules in terms of the Total Person Concept....or not win the 10 games. They can keep their circus.

Now...saying all of this...I can see how many who are fans of GT that did not graduate from GT would not share the same sentiment. At that same time, I personally know many non-GT grads that do share the same sentiment as I and adopted GT because they appreciated what it represented.

I do not think I am what is wrong with our "friggin fan base" as you so eloquently put it.

So, we're wrong because we want a team that is actually representative with our institute? That we want to have an ethical and morally right program?

Also, I agree with everything hiveredtech said.

I agree, either compete or give it up. I cant get real excited each fall about winning the sportsmanship award.

Very nice post 'hivered'

I'm a GT fan because my dad grew up a GT fan --raised me to be a GT fan (thanks to him taking me to a few games in the '60s I can boast 5 decades of games at GF/BDS --although I'm only 42) and I have remained a GT fan.

This coming from a UGA grad --one who appreciates his own hard-earned academic achievements in his chosen field of study in Athens. I do share those same sentiments about GT --I have always appreciated what GT represents as an academic institute --so much so that I have recently been mulling over grad school at GT (yes at 42!) It's something I wish I had done after graduating in '89.

u guys are delusional if u think bobby ross ran a clean program.

I live in the real world, where college football and college hoops are billion dollar businesses.

but I completely respect your position hivered and others along with you, I shouldn't have worded my post the way I did.

hypothetical question: if a Tech grad now is a delivery driver for a certain company, and he literally has trouble speaking and reading, what would you say happened? And how does that reflect on the institute? I only ask because you went into detail about the academics involved at Tech?

and do u guys remember the Reuben Houston ordeal? That guy was pushing 40lbs of marijuana down I-20
