RIP: Gus

Are the former NFL coaches really a serious consideration? While they are exceptions, the transition from NFL to college (and vice versa) is rarely a success.

If we poached the coach we might even get more recruits - no offense to Collins but I think Mal is a pretty good coach - not great but much better than average. He will get another head coaching job. There were rumors that CPJ could have had the Auburn job back in the day - not now - , whether true or not I don't know.

But, whether 2020 transfers or 2021 recruits, each requires a scholarship spot. Hence why you may see a few 2021 spots culled to make room for guys coming through the portal. With Malzahn being fired, I would presume anyone poached from Auburn would be immediately eligible to play here. For instance, a potential target for Tech who they got on campus in 2020 and is at a position of supreme need:

We might have a better shot at some of Auburn's better recruits if we brought Malzahn on as OC. He would be a good fit for the culture we are trying to build, and he already knows the Waffle House menu too. He was able to rebuild the offense at Auburn and it wasn't boring. He has established recruiting connections in our recruiting area to leverage.

I'd love this but would put my money on Tennessee if he were to leave Auburn.

Gus would be a nice upgrade for the offense. Shame that the chance of it happening is near zero.

Does Gus' buyout have one of those "buyout reduced by new contract amount clauses?" I'd assume so...

They were not true. They were agent rumors designed to get more money.

Fire Collins and replace him with Gus?

Horrible mistake. Team revolt. Loss of respect around the country. Would kill all the momentum we had, and we would start over again.

Gus would not take it. Not enough GT bag men, and the bag men are who make or break Gus.

Maybe someone already addressed it, but after TTU comes to their senses, why wouldn't they get Malzahn? Seems like he'd be a good fit in that state. Can't speak to Lubbock itself though, which is why I ask.

While it is true that Auburn has far more bag men than GT; that isn't what made Gus. He didn't beat both Alabama and UGA because he had a superior roster.

He needed to be close to beat them, even if he is Lombardi reborn.

Do you think Cam Newton went to Aubie because of Gus's charm? There are plenty more, just not well documented like Cam.

Yeah sure; but I still think he is a better OC than what we've got.

Edit: I'm not in favor of replacing CGC with him at this time.

Agreed

Actually I doubt it. A coach with the bargaining power to demand a $20mil+ severance payment isn't going to accept either a requirement to job hunt or an offset for any job he finds. But admittedly I haven't seen Gus' contract.

Then Gus could become Alabama's second Senator. The circle is complete.
