Another lost link to the past. It sad that so many younger Tech people never had the opportunity to meet Coach Dodd. His class and legacy are something that is lost in today’s world

I don't think he saw much playing time, but was certainly one of Dodd's boys. He's in the front row in this pic, a part of the "B-Team". Taken from this cool link:

Over a 3 or 4 year period in the early 1960s, Rossville either won (1962) or finished as the runnerup in AA, the state's 2nd largest classification, having won back to back titles in 1954 & 1955. And it was all politics that changed Rossville High School into Ridgeland High about 1990. Rossville had remained pretty strong up til about 1975, then fell off til Ridgeland was built next door and Rossville was no more. Ridgeland had a good year a few years back, sent a SS to Ohio State who now plays for the Saints, but it's nothing like the D-1 pipeline that used to exist.

The biggest negative factor for Rossville was the demise of the Peerless textile mill. We used to accuse Rossville of recruiting Peerless employees in exchange for their sons' athletic futures, the very same thing Dalton has been accused of with the carpet & floor covering businesses over the last six decades. Isn't it strange how people tend to gravitate to where the jobs are, especially if they have kids?

Being from Dalton, we played them every year, usually losing up until the late 1960s. They sent players everywhere to college, and not just to Tennessee & GT. I never played in or saw a game where my team beat Bobby Scott, a Rossville QB who played & started at Tennessee before going on to the Saints as Archie Manning's "caddy."

Ridgeland combined Rossville, Chattanooga Valley, and who else? Did they take some of L-FO’s district? I can’t remember.

The good old days when there were only 3 different classifications in Georgia HS athletics. When I grew up in Huntsville, AL there were only 4 in Alabama. Now we have 7 here in Georgia and I think they have 6 in Alabama now. Needless to say they are now giving out several more trophies.

From 1947-1955, there were 4 in GA: AA, A, B & C
From 1956-1972, there were 5 in GA: AAA, AA, A, B & C
From 1973-1977, there were 4 in GA: AAA, AA, A, & B
From 1978-1999, there were 4 in GA: AAAA, AAA, AA, & A
From 2000-2011, there were 5 in GA: AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, & A
From 2012-2015, there were 7 in GA: AAAAAA, AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, & A-Public & A-Private
Since 2016, there have been 8 in GA: AAAAAAA, AAAAAA, AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, & A-Public & A-Private

There was a lot of noise back in the 1970s to get rid of the B & C classes as it supposedly implied an inferior level of play. Tell that to Brent Cunningham who came out of 1967 C Champ Putnam County. Most of the impact of A-Private is having a class for a lot of small, non-football schools.

Toss in the melding of the racially divided systems about 1965 or so, a rapidly growing population in the 1970s & 1980s and you suddenly have a lot more schools & some unwieldy matchups & impossible transportation & logistics issues. Ergo, more classifications.
