Rome wasn't built in a day

We get a D and we’re off to the races. With a D this team would have an 8-10 win season. CPJ went through numerous Def coordinators and we finally figured out it wasn’t the coordinators, it was the recruiting. Imagine how many more 8+ win seasons we would have had under CPJ if he could have recruited defensive personnel comparable to the talent he inherited from Gailey. CBK has to figure out how to attract these kids and I don’t want to hear the academic crap, Gailey did it.
There was only one problem with recruiting under johnson, after he filled all his offensive needs, there were no spots left for defensive players!

Which was stupid, because we always had people leave the program and would be ~4 players under the limit. He never did learn how to manage the #s. Like we were on self imposed scholarship reduction.

I think a big factor is just depth. We probably beat loserville if we don't lose starters to injury.

Last night, we seemed to have our starters in the whole game. I think we're just gassed because we don't have good depth yet.

...but with the transfer portal, we may just be an offseason away if Key makes the right moves with players and staff.

Ole miss didn't become a Top 10 program just by making a good coaching hire. The hired Hugh Freeze and then used NIL to bring in a top recruiting class so blatantly that the NCAA had to make it legal (causation is a hell of a concept, prove me wrong). Time goes by and we play them tonight and it seems half the big plays are being made by guys who used to play for us. Worse: it seems like they've developed and gotten better since they were freshman and sophomore standouts for us.

I look around CFB and see 6th year players on their 3rd or 4th program contributing big time to the team's success.

Just look at what we were able to pull off this past offseason on offense. Who made our plays tonight? Transfers we bought and paid for, generally speaking.

So, here's the deal:
On offense, we need to transfer in a big bruising RB, a big split end type WR, another speedy WR, keep Singleton from transferring, and another TE. Probably wouldn't hurt to get another 2-3 guys on OL out of the portal.

On defense, we need to bring in 3 ready to start DTs and 2 DEs that have proven they can sack a QB. We desperately need a LB duo of equal caliber to Ace and Charlie. I think you bring in 6 new DBs (4 safeties, 2 corners) from the portal and they better have 20+ turnovers between them this season.

On ST, transfer kickers and punters have to be in the portal better than what we have, right?

On top of this, we need to hold our recruiting class in tact at a minimum. We're not in a position to play the # years to develop game, though, so let's get the guys who've got two years under their belt already who are either rotational guys at a Top 25 program or G5 starters looking to step up. We aren't going to be able to compete for many P5 starters, but I'm not saying we shouldn't try.

Don’t know that we need to transfer a big RB. Our guys have the frame, then need the weight. I would be disappointed if our RB room isn’t 10 lb heavier per man next year (some of the lighter guys more).

We're not where we want or need to be, but anyone who can't see that we've made strides or equates Key with Geoff isn't paying very close attention.

We left a lot of points on the field but were still within a touchdown late on the road against a top 20 team. There's still a talent gap, the OL still needs a lot of work, and there are occasional frustrating coaching decisions, but we look like a functional offense with a legit P5 caliber QB and OC. We're committing very few penalties and minimizing turnovers.

On the negative side, the defense is abysmal, particularly the tackling, and probably isn't going to get much better given another player gets hurt every other play, so I'd say a complete overhaul of the defensive staff should be prioritized in the off-season.

Ross went 2 years before winning an ACC game. Think about that for a second.

College football is completely different now. The rebuilding excuse is for loser coaches trying to buy time and milk their contract (a la The Great Clown). Winning can be immediate if you hire the right coach.

Deion has debunked the "rebuild" excuse.

Why don't we let Deion's season pan out and then decide this? He's won two games by razor thin margins against teams that are lesser teams than the top two teams we've played. I think SCSU could give Nebraska a good game this season. CO may end up being a solid team or it may not be. IMPO, we need to wait and see before anointing Deion the CFB Messiah.

The questions isn't if we've made strides, it's have we made enough strides? It isn't is Key as bad as Geoff (he isn't), it's is he better enough? Jury is out.

Sure, but I don't think we were ever going to have true answers for those questions this early into his tenure as full-time head coach.

Extremely gassed on defense. It proved ugly late in the game.

I don’t know if we can get all of that, but looking at programs at lower levels or other also-ran p5 for ballers is an option. keion came from ODU, Ace was from Maryland.
I think we tried with some guys on D, but it hasn’t come to fruition yet. Ace had an “okay” first season and Keion got hurt and was a no show. Ideally, we are looking for guys with at least two years left. It’s early yet, but maybe some of the transfers can still come into their own on D. Lord knows we need it
We need to find def stars on lower level teams (like Keion White) and take them away just like Ole Miss has done to us

Yeah, it's partly that I'm grumpy from a cold I've picked up, but just sounded a bit like a silly argument. We're absolutely better, but that's in comparison to where we were which was dirt. I think maybe the way to translate what I was thinking about is while you do acknowledge we aren't where we want to be, it doesn't feel that we are on track to getting there either yet.

It would be nice to have a big bruiser of an RB to run up the middle or off tackle, which Buster seems determined to do in spite of the fact that we can't do it.

Are you saying our D does not need rebuilding, that we have the personnel and talent to have a good defense right now . Seriously?????

We were the 85th-ranked D last year. We do not have the coaching to have a good defense. Rebuilding implies a multi-year process, which is a loser mentality excuse in this era. The Clown's go-to excuse in order to normalize losing to fans like you.

CU also “reimagined” its transfer standards so that his JSU players could be 1) admitted, and 2) transfer enough credits to be academically eligible. State legislators had to ok it.

This. I wonder how well our GT lobbyists could have done in the UGag legislature. Lol
