Roof and LSU

Well of course they were wrong. Even if PJ didn't have success, no way GT was going to hire a previously failed college head coach.

Probably shouldn't have hired a previously failed college defensive coordinator, either.

I think Roof has done himself a disservice here. He isn't going to get his pick of the recruits the way Tenuta did. I don't think GT has the talent pipeline to have both a great D and a great O. Maybe Roof felt he could get some exceptions while the O went after non-traditional guys (like our abacks who are generally great hs players without the measureables). Roof would do better by settling in at a south Ga or Fl school and go all out on recruiting for a few years. Then he could sell himself as someone with connections to FL-GA talent. Maybe land a Ga Southern type BCS level job and then rebuild his head coaching resume.

Tech is a tough position for Roof. He isn't going to look like a recruiting guru and he isn't going to field top D's year in and year out (like Tenuta did).

Tenuta didn't field a top defense every year. Look up the stats and stop spreading misinformation. Biggest fairy tale promoted on ST by unknowledgeable fans.

I don't know. I feel like if our O had been good this year, the defense would have been above average. Not to say there weren't flaws with the defense itself, but I don't think there are many defenses that would've looked good when paired with the 3-and-out machine that was our offense this year.

I'm holding out hope for a good defense next year.

Tenuta sucks thats why he moves every few years in to the same type of job he just had somewhere else. Plus, he is a curmudgeon that wont recruit

2004: 22nd in PPG, 14th YPG
2005: 16th in PPG, 10th in YPG
2006: 20th PPG, 21st YPG
2007: 17th in PPG, 11th YPG

It was Roof's recruiting acumen as much as his DC skills that won him the job. He knew exactly what he was getting into and had/has a plan. I hope.

Tenuta's defense works well with this offense when it is competent. It was go big or go home.

Mediocre D. And he only had, what, three nfl linemen set up for that 2008 defense?

Roof has never been a good DC.

I think when you measure his performance, you have to consider the talent he has to work with. I still think he's doing a good job for us with the limited talent he has to work with.

We have a fairly solid set of DBs, but our Front 7 is severely limited. We have essentially zero ability to get pressure on a QB, and that makes it harder on the defense as a whole.

We can't get the big uglies.

This means the coach has to do a great coaching job to neutralize you deficiencies. To date that hasn't happened due to TR reluctance to be creative with his blitz schemes.

They weren't world-beaters, but the defense kept us in several games this year that the offense couldn't manage to win (ND, Duke, UVA, VT, uga) and played really well against FSU.

Imagine how good the defensive stats would've been if we had anything close to our 2014 offense. The defense would've been on the field much less. We'd likely be 10-2 and bitching about how the defense gave away the UNC and Clemson games.

The reason other schools still court him is because he has a reputation as a good not great defensive coordinator, with the cards dealt at GT and poor offensive play this last year. He has done a pretty fair job.

He is probably better off staying here, keeps a lid on expectations.

Quit spreading misinformation.

Sorry, we can't get the big uglies. One of those 4 down linemen in 2008 didn't make the nfl.

And nfl caliber receivers don't want to play in cpj's offense, they would rather play at Duke or a pro style o like BC.

Agreed. I still think we could get away with just an okay defense if the offense is clicking.

However, we have GOT to step-up recruiting on the defense. IMO, you just cannot scheme away a lack of top-to-bottom talent there like you can on offense. Even with great schemes so much of CFB defense is about physical superiority to the guy opposite you.
