Rumor is

Are you seriously comparing Duke and South Carolina? Have you been to those two stadiums and schools to actually see how VASTLY different those two programs are? If you're a high school football player and you don't get excited about running out onto the field at a place like Williams-Brice Stadium at USC then nothing would ever get you excited. The fans there go nuts for the team. I wish we GT fans supported our team even half as rabidly as the USC fans support theirs (note this is not a knock on those who DO show up for games or on those who CAN'T show up for games for whatever reason).

Duke has a high school stadium and nobody shows up. They win very few football games and are competitive in almost as few as they win. USC has a huge, extremely loud, PACKED football stadium and they have reason to believe they are getting better and have a coach who has proven to win championships. I know they don't have tons of winning history in football at USC but they have lots of tangible things going for them that Duke doesn't.

I can understand being upset about losing recruits to Duke because of their stature. And I can understand being upset about losing recruits to USC because of how much poaching they've been doing. But to lump them in with Duke shows a lack of understanding about what those two programs are.

chill....the fact of the matter is we are losing recruits to a program with NO history, I believe it was put earlier as the "armpit of southern football"...While I do apprecieate "the most loyal fans in cfb" as they put it and wished we had the same type fan base, I believe duke has won more conference titles than USC and all that I hear from MY sec buds is that if they had their choice they would trade them back for us in a heartbeat..UscE was never a factor in the ACC and will never be in the SEC. I don't fault any kid from going to where he wants to go and just said it suxes, that's all.

also, Spurrier's days of winning championships are over my friend IMO...as long as he continues to be a thorn in the doggies side he is still -a -ok with me.

Furthermore, Johnson is moving on up and Spurrier has been working his way down. Also, there's Columbia compared to Atlanta -- or rather no comparison. Cremins went "home" to USC for all of one day, IIRC, then came scrambling back to Tech. Puggy Blackmon achieved great success at Tech, then went to USC and virtually disappeared. Let's face it, USC is located at the end of the road.

My take, if a kid decides on Duke, he may have academics in mind as a priority. If he picks USCheat, it's all about football and not having to work in class. No real history...bad school.

Esso, your handle gives away a pretty HUGE bias against USC :)

And neither you nor goose are addressing the fact that we're talking about kids who want to play, want to play early, want to do so in front of HUGE and adoring crowds who make tons and tons of noise, and in some cases are happy to live in a city like Columbia, SC.

I love Atlanta which is why I've chosen to live here. But that doesn't make me so blind to the fact that there are OTHER valid opinions besides mine. I have been to Columbia, SC a number of times for both business and for SC games. I've been to Clemson (not for business but for plenty of football and basketball games) and I think it's a great town too. I've been to Durham and I like it there as well.

As for history (I'm combining responses to both you and goose in here instead of posting two separate responses)... I only mentioned it because so many people seem to think that current recruits think it is important. I respectfully submit that the history of GT football vs the history of USC football vs the history of Duke football has very little to do with recruiting for any of our schools in most cases (though I'm sure one or two kids here and there are into it). I think RECENT history has a lot to do with recruiting and PERCEPTION has a great deal to do with that.

I am willing to bet that if you go to most cities in this country that more people will know who Steve Spurrier is than who Paul Johnson is. And while I'm very happy to have Paul Johnson here and am anxious to see what he can do with our program, and I might even believe that he's a better football coach than visor-boy, I'm not going to sit here and believe for one second that Steve Spurrier's name doesn't carry some cache to recruits vs Paul Johnson's name.

As for playing in the SEC-east... I'm not sure how that one gets spun as a negative. If you're an athlete playing at the top levels of your sport then MOST of the time you want to compete against the best there is. And one can certainly make the argument that the SEC east is going to put you up against top competition almost every week (and you'll be on TV doing it, too).

goose, perhaps you're right that Spurrier's days of winning championships are over. But obviously many kids think you're mistaken or think that the best place to show their capabilities is playing against the best.

Look, I'm not happy to lose recruits to anyone, and I am getting very sick of losing them to USC, but mainly because it certainly appears they've made us an easy target. They know how to sell against us and they do it very well and we haven't figured out (but give us time and I think we will) how to combat that. But I'm not going to sit and wonder how it is possible that kids might like the idea of playing at USC over other schools. I've seen the place too much to be surprised that kids would want to play in a fantastic football environment like Williams-Brice. And I agree on the "it suxes" comment WHOLE HEARTEDLY!!!

If you listed all the Universities on my "hit" list, USC east would be near the bottom or not even on the list. I really have nothing personal against USC. Except for beating UGA last year, they're irrelevant.

My post was intended to bring out some data leading to a summation. Since Chaun has made his choice, the discussion is only academic. But I do hate to see our recruits influenced by two-bit coaching bubbas who specialize only in blowing smoke up their ass.

JOJATK- GOOD POINTS.. I quess that I am so biased towards the GOLD and WHITE that I will never see why someone would not want to be here given the oppurtunity. For the record I don't have anything against the the Gamecocks, I actually root for them a good bit against clemson and the dogs.

I see where you're coming from. I used to root for USC but ever since they obviously started using GT's commit list as a research tool for recruiting and then began bad-mouthing GT to those kids I've begun to find it much harder to root for them in any game except against UGA :)

Jo, I lived in Cola for over 7 years. Fairly nice town, but nowhere near Atlanta, IMO. Both large cities, with traffic congestion, big buildings, night life, etc. More a college town than Atlanta, but not as much so as Clemson and Athens. That, to me, is not the issue.

Spurrier is certainly a draw, as was Holtz before him. While both have had some good years, neither has come close to winning even their division, much less the conference. Holtz finally gave out, and Spurruer has no more than 2-3 more years. I seriously doubt that he will be there when Gresham graduates.

My feeling is... they will never be odds on to win the division. The reason is they have to beat UGAG, UT and UF all in the same year (most years) to get there. That is tough. Those three only have to beat the other two. Since 1992, there has never been another representative of the SECe other than one of those 3. USCe is at a serious competitive disadvantage.

Add to that their recruiting disadvantage. They are in a state that produces minimal D1A talent. And they are second fiddle to Clemson in their own state. In addition to that, UNC, NCSU, UGAG, GT, UF and FSU all recruit heavily there. GA and FL also have this, but both of those states produce HUGE crops of players in a given year. Not so in SC. There's just not enough talent to go around for them to build a top program. Clemson faces the same struggle, but they get more than their share of in-state blue-chippers. Spurrier isn't winning the SEC anytime soon, IMO, and he'll retire shortly.

All that said, there is no real reason for a top GA recruit to go to USCe, unless he has some connection... which Gresham does. That is why he's there. It's not about the stadium, the city, Spurrier vs. Johnson, or SEC vs. ACC.

2 reasons to go as far as I can tell...first, the support for their football program and secondly, it's a very easy school.
