With Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and his staff in town for a satellite camp, Central Gwinnett’s castle was transformed into the Horseshoe South on Thursday morning.

A scarlet ‘O’ was painted at midfield, the end zones read Ohio State and a handful of Buckeyes fans showed up to shout “O-H” to Meyer, who finished the traditional cheer with an “I-O.”

Nearly 300 high school football players signed up for the Central Gwinnett Elite Camp that in addition to Meyer featured Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield, Georgia State head coach Trent Miles and their staffs.

Coaches from Boston College, Mercer, East Tennessee State, West Georgia, Coastal Carolina and Kennesaw State were among those on hand as well.

“Incredible,” Central head coach Todd Wofford said of the turnout. “When you had all these different satellite camps popping up I thought we were going to take a hit because there’s one going on today (with Georgia, Colorado State and Georgia Southern at Buford High School). I don’t know what (registration) ended up being, but we had a swarm here at the end. We couldn’t have had a better day of weather, couldn’t have had a better group of kids competing and it’s just huge.”

We ought to partner up with a couple of south east schools and do these in Texas and/or California.

I've heard the ones in geosynch didn't really change positions that much

I, if I had to make a choice, have not been a very big proponent of these off campus clinics for college staffs. So I have not followed a lot about them, but am curious about some things

- Do the kids have to be invited? Or are they open to any kid on any HS team from the area. Is it free or do the HS kids pay a fee?

- Are the college staffs instructing or just observing? If the college staffs are instructing, I can envision some kid being taught techniques from, let us say, 5/6 different college staffs that are each contradicting each other. Not to mention what the kids HS coach may have been teaching him for 3 or 4 years. But I have no idea how it is conducted.

- Assuming these camps have some 4 or 5 star rated players, what a riot this will turn into when some kid tears an ACL / Achilles / or whatever.

Sure someone with a better understanding of these camps can shed some light.
