I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen more about this play in the media, because the ref squares up and hits Stephen Garcia for some reason. If you haven't seen it, it's pretty entertaining. I wonder if there was any comment on this official on why he didn't think the LSU defense could do the job themselves.

That is crazy and Hilarious!

My wife graduated from USC east and we watched this game live. When it happened, I said "Holy ****! did he just hit the player??!" Apparently it had already happened once before earlier in the game and the second time they gave it brief attention to it on the replay. They did say it looked like the ref "was trying to protect himself". I was amazed. Someone from the NCAA needs to look REAL closely at this one because it sure looked like foul play from a ref to me.

Wow... That was not out of protection. He threw himself into Garcia. He could have stepped back or attempted to get out of the way but instead he squared up and hit him.

ESPN showed the reply on Final, and I laughed. But there was no reason for him to do it, and it's a bad play. What are the odds that he calls ACC games next season?

I'd say that Ron Cherry and his bud's are making calls now to get this guy on board.

So that's what Woody Hayes is doing these days. I was wondering where he was working. :)

That is awesome...It was a textbook tackle.

Slide your feet along the line of scrimmage, square up and explode through the ball-carrier. Picture perfect.

Wow, LSU is so overrated this year that they feel they need to recruit the referees to play as a 12th man. The sad thing is that if UGA beats this overrated LSU team, they will think they are world beaters; and on the opposite side, if they lose, they will consider it another loss to a top team.

As funny as the idea is, this is ridiculous and I'm blown away that this wasn't more looked into. What if an umpire at a baseball game stepped in and tripped up a baserunner? Or if a basketball ref deflected a pass out of bounds?

are you serious?? the guy was trying to shimmy out of the way..when he saw he was going the same way..he tried to hop past him and he cut into him.....

chill out...it wasnt on purpose...if anything he saves garcia from getting his head knocked off.

I've NEVER seen anything like that in my life. :wow:

It didn't look like self preservation to me.

GTBlazer, I have watched the video a few times, and now completely disagree with you.. He broke the QB down and laid him out.

Here is an extra write-up on it.

Update: Joe Person of the Columbia State reports that the Wilbur Hackett Jr., the umpire involved in the play, was a three-year starter at linebacker for Kentucky in the late-1960s.

he is looking at him...but look...the ref is two-3 yards outside the hash..garcia is on the hash...the ref is side hopping into garcias apparent path...both cut....collide...

if anything your picture confirms my thoughts....good try though

Does this remind anyone else of that Buffalo Wild Wings commercial where the official trips the player running down the sideline?
