Short yardage vs ND

2 out of 10 third down conversions stalls drives & stalled drives means low point production unless the defense & special team generates points. Same problem that the offense has struggled with the last 4-5 years.

Concerned.

JTS, thank you. I was trying to make the same points yesterday and was hammered by several fonts. We never made ND play honest defense in the second half so they just brought the pressure up the middle. There's no way an OL can give you time in that situation. We didn't use the outside, we didn't use the space behind the LBs, we didn't effectively use screens. We either handed off the the one back on the shotgun, ran a QB draw or tried to throw to someone other than CJ. I'm not saying the line played well, I'm saying we didn't give the offense a decent chance due to the sets and plays we limited ourselves to.

I definitely think we should have gone to that CJ screen more than we did. It worked great, I think twice, in the first half and we never saw it again in the second half. That's the kind of thing we should have tried on one of those 3rd down conversions - maybe even 4th down instead of punting.
I think the ND defense at first played back on Calvin, respecting his speed, but later adjusted to playing a CB close to Calvin and a Safety up top to support him. I bet if we did throw a screen pass to him after that adjustment he would have gotten laid out like Darius Walker.

We could of thrown any one of those short passes to one of our other WRs. We could put WRs in motion if only to help Reggie read whether they are in zone or man, but we don't do any of these things.

How about handing it off to Cox on 3rd & short to keep the offense honest.

The other receivers came to mind, but I was just saying that to the "Calvin screen" in particular. I would love to see a replay to see what exactly was going on with the other receivers, because we did spread the ball around pretty well in Auburn 05.

Never really got the fullback thing either. I'm sure the idea is to let holes develop and then have an extra blocker in front of the back. And at least last year, PJ was a power running back who was good at getting tough yards like a fullback. Still, with Choice and Grant as backs I think we could have used Cox in short down situations if his shoulder permits.
