We have 20 commits. That leaves 5 open. How many will we take? The only guy I feel we have a good shot with is aycock. Any info on ricky johnson?

Just adding Aycock at this point equates to a really good class!

You guys think we crack a top 20 class? A top 15? Where do you guys think we'll end up?

Unless we miraculously land Darren Myles, Gillard and a mystery top 100 recruit we arent a top 15 class.

Realistically, our best case is to get Aycock and MacMillan and finish with a #24 or 25 class in scout.

Yeah, according to ESPN we aren't even waiting in the wings of the top-25 (though Maryland is), so the odds of us getting in the top 20 are slim to none but top 25 is possible, depending on how Aycock is valued as an Athlete (rather than RB).

We will close out with 23 or 24:

Dontae Aycock (100%)
Wesley Tate (80%...we will offer tomorrow)
Carl Miles (90%)

Nolan MacMillan is still 50/50.

We will not be Top 25 though.

Hivered, you seem to be more in the loop. What are your thoughts on Tate and Miles? Are they guys that other "big" schools missed on, or are they guys we are "gambling" on just to fill spots? I was under the impression that we wouldnt offer anyone that was a "gamble" because of limited spots next year?

Do you honestly expect any school to award scholarships just to fill spots? That's absurd. Scholarships are awarded when a school thinks the kid can help the program. If they are gambles, then they are preferred walk-ons.

Miles falls more in the sleeper category than Tate. Tate seems to be someone with all of the tools...just has not exploded yet. He has flashes of brilliance on film.
Miles apparently does some things very well as a CB...needs help in other areas.

There are excellent scouting reports for free on ESPN for all recruits...everyone should read them.

You have not looked closely at the 2005 and 2006 GT classes. Lots of gambles--that didn't pay off.

Fans are hoping that we are not sliding down that slope again as recruiting winds down. GT has a need for DBs, and frankly, Miles looks like a bit of gamble in an effort to fill a need. We won't know if he was a good or bad bet for at least 2 years, in all probability.

Miles is not really a gamble.

He has visited Kstate and Pitt wanted him up there pretty badly. Also, Tennessee was just in his highschool/home to visit with him.

I think we are going to offer Miles more for depth. We are very young in our secondary and very deep. He is a guy that can be a special teams standout.

We will have some big fish in next years class.

I appreciate your comments and knowledge, but I'll be glad when we are not recruiting "for depth" (which is a comment on player quality), and it's Florida who wants a skill position player badly who is signing with GT, and not KState or Pitt. GT fans need to ratchet expectations up a couple of notches.

I hope that we land those 'big fish" next year, and for years to come.

What is the value of being rated highly in recruiting? My experience is that most of these services cater to the schools that are in the club so they can sell more subscriptions, ads, etc.

We have a very good solid class and we just will have to do what every other school does, bring them in get them stronger, faster, smarter and see if they have the heart to compete on Saturdays. Recruiting is still a crap shoot no matter where you are ranked. Why do your think USC, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. still get beat on occassion. Their 5 star did not make a play when they had to have it. Even Tebow gets stopped every now and then.

Recruiting is an inexact science so I would not hang my hat on where anybody rates any class. It's just a guess, some might say an educated guess but from what I have seen it usually is an ill informed guess that is more related to selling Scout, Rivals, etc. to the widest audience possible.

Go Jackets!

What is funny is that people argue about stars and recruiting rankings as if they're the same thing. Of course, stars affect rankings, but rankings are skewed by many things that have nothing to do with stars. Some of these things are pretty suspect, and work against a team like GT:
  1. Total number of recruits in class. Many factories take over 25 players knowing that many will not qualify for college. However, the ratings take a snapshot at NSD, and not later when the kids don't end up at that school
  2. The popularity of a given service's site for a schools fan base definitely appears to affect that school's ranking on that site.
  3. No evaluation of character/intelligence & academic record/leadership/personality. Huge factors that the NFL spends lots of $$$ researching.
  4. Some players will be misranked for the actual positions they'll play in teams' specific schemes.
IMO, all these factors work against GT in ratings.

Exactly, the rankings are systemically biased against GT, or any team where all the kids who sign actually step foot on campus. Not that GT is getting a better class than Florida, but GT's "real" ranking is probably 5-10 spots higher than the services' ranking. The services go along with this instead of giving honest analysis because schools which sign more than 25 players also tend to sell a lot of subscriptions.

The services also have tremendous bias towards schools with bigger subscription bases for a particular service. A Hive insider did a study which showed Scout ranks players higher if they commit to schools with popular Scout sites and the same with Rivals. Rivals, for example, ranked Calvin Johnson a four-star after committing to GT, a horrifically wrong rating for a #2 overall draft pick.

So I do think we have top-25 talent coming into this class. I don't know if CPJ can make us an elite UF/USC/UT type school, but I do think we will be consistently top-25 while he his here with a few top-10 (at least) years mixed in.

I think it still remains to be seen if CPJ is the guy who can take us to that level. If you look at our history ever since Bobby Dodd our best coaches have been the ones who rebuild us and keep us from falling into the crap shoot. The problem is they then proceed to other schools or the NFL. CPJ is probably someone who is going to be around a while and will at least keep us consistently above the .500 mark. Also, he is capable of leading us to a great season once in a while, perhaps even a NC, something Gailey wasn't capable of. If he leads us to an equal or better record season next year then I might start thinking he's the man to take us to the top.

Not outstanding classes like 2007...that is for sure. The sleeper recruits were actually not the fall-out as much as the top and the middle as a percentage.

In 2006, I guess you could say the least recruited players were Sed Griffin, Dom Reese, Shane Bowen, and Trevor Bray. Three of those four turned out well. DeRon Jasper was lightly recruited...chose us over Wake Forest and Kentucky,,,not sure that is a total gamble. We were just not heavy at the top that year....we had Lawrence Marius whom Tenuta ran off...and Osahon Tongo as the most celebrated recruits. Robert Hall and Demaryius Thomas have been big-time contributors from that class.

In 2005, we had two late additions that were not known about. One was Vance Walker....who will now be a 1st day NFL draft pick. The other was Jake Blackwood. Jake has been a positive addition to the team and while he has not been an every down player...he has contributed. Matt Braman was lightly recruited but chose us over Colorado. Like in 2006, we lacked star power at the top from a recruiting buzz perspective....Taalib Tucker, Jonathan Garner, and Colin Peek were the most chatted about. Vance Walker, Michael Johnson, Anthony Barnes, and Jahi Word-Daniels have been big-time contributors from that class.

As for "recruiting for depth": That is all any team does. Starters make up 1/4 of the football team. All you really need for starters are about 6 blue chips per year. I think we are fine for years to come.

We are still on track for consistent Top 25 finishes only. Need more studs whether they come with stars or not.
