So..How Has Duke Turned It Around?

I know they are not world beaters but I was really surprised at the athletic talent they had on the DL last year. It looks like Cutcliff has gotten a commitment from the admin to improve the program. As I've said before, it seems like a lot of teams in our conference are stepping up their program, are we going to keep up?
DUKE DOESNY BEAT RANKED TEAMS. They are horrifically average. IF YOU WANT TO BE DUKE GO GET COUNSELING YOU PUSSY.

For one, getting to be competitive with winning seasons and bowl games was the goal when Cutcliffe was hired. That was the norm for us when we fired Gailey. Second, he is a bit of a QB savant. The guy running his offense is usually pretty good. Third, he stood up for his program and has gotten new locker rooms, an indoor practice facility, a nicely refurbished stadium, and other helps. His kids take no classes until after lunch. They practice in the morning, have meetings and lunch, then are free. It’s hard to see how serious a student you are if you don’t start class until after lunch. It is easier to make grades to stay eligible in a liberal arts program. The more quantitative the curriculum the harder it is to avoid some failing grades.

He seems to do a good job relating to his players and making it fun. The Mannings coming by every Spring does not hurt. Ted Roof recruited absolutely no kids from NC, while Cutcliffe has some local kids playing. This increases local interest. He hs been their most successful coach since Spurrier. These are the reasons as I see them.

This is a silly post. Of course the ACC is nothing like the 90's. Not even Clemson of today is as dominant as FSU was in the 90's. And then, you only played 11 games and there was no ACCCG to give you an extra game. There were likewise only about 2/3 of the bowls that are present today. Back then if you had a 10 win season, you were at worse 10-2. You can now lose 4 games and end up 10-4...that's like comparing apples and refrigerators.

The recruiting restrictions are not significantly different than Gailey faced and he brought us a plethora of players who played in the NFL. Johnson has been here 10 years and some of Gailey's players are STILL playing in the NFL. At the very least, Morgan Burnett and Michael Johnson come to mind. And this other player you might remember named Johnson with a first name of Calvin was also a Gailey product. The dude absolutely sucked as a college coach and even he was able to recruit effectively, even if he never had a decent QB. Although I'll remind you that Sean Renfree was committed to come to Tech when Gailey was fired and Johnson was coach. Given the success he had at Duke, it's not a stretch to imagine him being successful at Tech.

As for comparing us to Duke, it's an apt comparison. They beat us 43-20 last year. We beat them 38-35 in 2016 and they beat us 34-20 in 2015. So yeah, they've beaten us 2 out of the past 3 years. I know you youngsters want to think 'the world has changed' but I heard the same argument during Gailey's tenure about how 'it's not the same as when Ross was here'. And when he was here, it was 'it's not the same as it was back when Bobby Dodd was coach'. Football and leagues change. You either change with it or you wither into insignificance.

Ok, you Cherokee County redneck, tell me what the öööö we ever won with Gailey? What was our best season and bowl win?

What exactly has Duke won other than some recent head to heads against us?

You want to talk about firing Johnson, fine, but don't give us this bullshit fake history of how Gailey was such a great recruiter or discount the major bowls we have been to under CPJ. Or the Coastal titles and ACC. CCG had one great class at the end of his tenure and we won exactly dick when he was coach. GT is always going to have and up and down history but you better have someone lined up to take CPJ's place who knows the current climate or it may get worse. So far we haven't had consecutive losing seasons.

Awww, someone's widdle feewings must be hurt.
It appears you suck at reading and/or reading comprehension. I said Gailey sucked as a college football coach. If we had ever won anything with him as a coach, he might still be our coach, God forbid.

But compare the # of players he put in the NFL to Johnson even though Johnson has had more years...the numbers are staggering.

And I also didn't say anything about championships Duke has won, you mental midget. I said they have beaten us 2 out of the past 3 years and will likely be favored by Vegas in our game this year. So yes, we are a comparable program to Duke at this point. Now go pound your head into the sand a while and see if you can calm down.

Yes, we will lose to Duke. Happy now?

Hey, you're the one who lives in Woodstock, not me.

Wrong. I have a house on a golf course in Woodstock where I spend most weekdays, a condo at the beach, a cabin in the mountains and a farm with a farmhouse below Columbus. But keep trying. You're sucking at your points so far but you're bound to get lucky sooner or later and get something right.

That's really original, friend.

From my understanding, their being a private school gives them more latitude to recruit as well as alter academic offerings than we have. That could be wrong. But there it is anyways.
Duke has definitely gotten better athletes under Cutcliffe but to suggest there's a significant talent differential between us and them is wrong, IMHO.

Puke ain’t crap. Why are we acting like they are something to emulate.

When did they last go to a major bowl?

We need to start aiming higher and stop thinking like losers incapable of achieving anything.

I think Cutcliffe successfully pushed the school to invest more resources into the program and he’s translated that into better game preparation and better players. If none of his players have class after lunch, then that is a great example of having buy in from the school.

I think what happened at GT was the former AD allocated resources elsewhere (or ran out of resources to allocate) and the program fell behind as a result. GT needs more resources and a higher commitment from the school. The story the other day about a player having a lab or class conflict with football practice is a great example of where the school could do more to accommodate the football program.

This.

Sure, Duke has had some success, but they are not on our level as a PROGRAM. To say that the past couple years means that they have "passed us" is just dumb. Florida State is in shambles right now - has Duke passed them as a program? Hell no. Get the right coach there and FSU would be a NC contender in a heartbeat, while Duke will still be Duke.

Great, now with our history we are comparing to Duke, sad day in GT history

This is true, and I'm not sure how it has happened. Their recruiting rankings are similar, and I think the overall talent is pretty similar, but damn if Gailey didn't manage to find some 3 stars with NFL talent, while Johnson has not. Even Johnson's 4 star players have turned out to be busts for a wide variety of reasons (some out of our control). I really have no idea what to chalk it up to, but I think it's 90% of the reason we're sitting where we are right now.

Good reasons, and Duke has gotten better, but only relatively so, since they were so far down when Cutcliffe was hired. Clempsen, Duke, Navy, Miami, and maybe even Georgia, have gotten better, not so much by hiring a BETTER coach, but by hiring the right coach. The "fit" is important. Look at recent events at Texas, Tennessee, Michigan ( three times)
