Stansbury on 680

It’s a revenue maximization tactic. No harm in trying it.

I think student tickets should become voided if not used by 10 minutes after kickoff time. Sell those tickets for $10 (currently free) starting middle first Qtr. Do that a few times and they’ll get their asses in the seats.

- Somehow get student to come - student section gets emptier and emptier = maybe taking out a section of the stadium to make a student friendly area for gathering would be a good idea
- The metal seats with no backs in West are tight and somewhat uncomfortable - Can we redo seating - I'd pay more
- I'm ok with discount seats if not sold a few days before the game
- I'm also ok with North stands being full of visitors. We need every dollar we can get

Some things that have crossed my mind over the years:
  • I'd rip out the upper north and extend the new area they are thinking of. Make it a series of bars/restaurants/merch.
  • Take some of the seats we would have had in the upper north. Connect the lower north and lower south with the west stands to complete the bowl. It would have a bit of an Autzen vibe to it the way that I envision it. I'm not sure how easy this would be with the placement of the stands today.
  • Since we always have 12:30 games, might as well build overhangs on the West stands like they have at Washington/Oregon. Leave the East side open for opposing fans to bake or add one there as well.
  • Improve the concessions - offering, facade, and pricing - in the stadium. Honestly, I would have been okay with what we had but now the Falcons and Braves have really upped their game. Gonna have to start selling alcohol in the stadium as well.
  • Better opponents on the OOC schedule. I know we get UGA every other year, but gonna need more to attract more people. Even if it is fans and opponents alike. Toss in a Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, etc. on the off years. It was great for the dome, but it could have been BDS instead. Both fanbases loved it.
Before we toss in these out of conference, lets get competitive in the ACC. People are already expecting a 6-6 record.

People talk about the large inventory of international students that we have that are not interested in football. However, the total size of the student body is twice the size that it was when I was there in the 1980s. So it would seem to me that the non-international student population is still the same if not larger. I assume that there are still more than 30 fraternities, right?

Here's an interesting study (3 years old about student attendance and the continuing decline):

This one is kinda a condensed version of the first one:

Yeah, it's much larger than when I graduated in '98 as well, yet student attendance was much higher in the '96/'97 seasons than now.

And for the just "win" and they will come crowd:

The University of Alabama, despite garnering national championships in three of the past four years, has seen the percentage of student tickets actually used by students hover between 68.4 and 71.8 percent per season during that span, placing student apathy among the biggest concerns facing athletic director Bill Battle.

This article is a few years old as well, but is relevant.

If the schools don't find a way to engage the students/young alumni successfully, the school athletic budgets will look different; even more so if the increasing TV contracts level off/decline in the not too distant future.

Start of the 3rd qtr, all unsold tickets are available for $5. Get it packed for raucous 4th quarter where remaining tickets are free! Must be wearing GT gear to get tickets.
Heck. Start of the game. There are people looking for things to do in Atlanta. We need fans and full stadiums more than money.

Also note that the school has gone from a bunch of mostly Georgians who were good at math and liked designing and building things to international and National uber nerds during that time.

But you could give 'em away for free and still nobody will be showing up. This end of the demand curve is probably not going to motivated by monetary concerns.

Like we did with the swich to adidas, the next time that the radio deal comes up, everything needs to be on the line, up to and including being willing to spend endowment income on buying better segment time, not just ad time.

With 680 we should at the very least have 2-days with a Yellow Jacket Roundtable, and they should carry CPJ's and CJP's weekly media briefings. There should also be various weekly interviews with people like ADTS that get replayed across all time blocks.

This is the only way that we're going to make headway against the radio dial. As the radio dial makes headway, we'll start to get additional coverage in the paper and blogs, and we'll start to sway the undecideds.

Sell the brand, talk the team, spend the money. Make the same type of headway in the next media deal and we'll start righting the ship

Sad to say but all of football as we old timers know it is dying. Maybe old timers a bad word choice - so change to those of us who love the game and have for decades and don’t like many of the changes. Regardless the attendance decline as others have said is not unique to GT but our downeard trend line might be a little steeper over the next decade? I estimate my NFL viewing down 70 plus percent and I hope the politics of the NFL stay clear as best possible from college. I doubt it though because there are haters of all things uniquely American. My 2 cents. Anyway I still go to 9 to 11 live college games a year between my two favorite teams and will continue unless the pace of change accelerates in the direction it is going. Flag football and no kickoff allowed. That sounds exciting? I guess my point is that sadly this might be a losing battle. Hope I am wrong. Either you love the game or you don’t and those in the middle fade fast and use every excuse to not attend. I believe all this effort to add to the in stadium experience is low return except for attracting casual lookers and hope they stick? They won’t unless they love the game. It is the game and always has been and will be - at least for me. L I must be out of touch because when I attend I only need a place to sit and stand and cheer. I thought this is why I went in the first place? THWG

I’m going to get a tattoo of this post. Well said.

Edited: four posts in six years...

I don’t give a shit what other people pay to attend games. I’m going to keep buying my season tickets. I just want asses in the seats. The only Tech games I remember are games when the crowd is raucous AF.

...And believe it or not, if you can create that atmosphere then there will be more demand for tickets...which means you will be able to get a higher price.
