Stingtalkers,

I need some help with a stat I've been trying like heck to find. I'm trying to track down how many fumbles lost CPJ's 1998 GSU team had. If anybody knows a resourse, I'd appreciate it.

I think 90% of them were in the national championship game :(

I know it was more than 5 turnovers for GSU in that game, and they still kept it close, they should have crushed Umass.

I have the #7 in my head for the game vs UMass.

Might be wrong, but I feel pretty good about it.

Was it 7 fumbles or 7 turnovers? I know 7 applies to one of them.

I don't have any stats, but IIRC, CPJ said that they had a good year as far as fumbles, or lack there of, went. Although, I don't know if he was referring to total fumbles or fumbles lost.

From the GS media guide:
Most Fumbles
6 vs. Massachusetts...........................12/19/1998
Most Fumbles Lost
6 vs. Massachusetts
......................(FCS Championship) 12/19/1998

Georgia Southern coach Paul Johnson said there was nothing magical about how the Minutemen beat his team. He pointed to a very opportunistic defense that grabbed its chances against an offense that outgained Massachusetts 595 yards to 462.

"We dug ourselves such a hole that we could not climb out of it," he said.

"Everything I knew couldn't happen today happened. We couldn't let them rush. They had 303 yards. We could have no turnovers, and we turned it over seven times." By the time it was over, Massachusetts set a title game record for points and the teams, two of the top three offenses in Division I-AA, combined for the most points ever in a title game. The 98 points topped the 86 scored in 1985 by Georgia Southern and Furman.

Thanks guys. What you guys are mentioning is basically where I hit a wall. I was actually able to find a box score of all the regular season games and the championship game (sorry to rehash that memory GSU folks) but not the other playoff games against Colgate, UConn, and Western Illinois. It's weird because SI had all the 97 games including the playoff games but not 98. Oh well, I'm taking a look at fumbles per game in CPJ's career. It's pretty interesting.
