Stetson Bennett

But seriously imagine this:
  • Players get paid. I doubt Stetson was making a ton but he was probably getting enough money to hire someone to do his school work for him.
  • In the post COVID world, you can take all of your classes online and never have to show up for anything. Even more so for athletes. This goes back to my point of hiring someone to do your course work.
  • You are an athlete at a diploma mill where the classes are already on par with "13th grade" level of challenging.
And you still can't even get a PE degree like the rest of your teammates? Yikes.

I'm pretty sure ncaa requirements apply whether or not you are on scholarship.
You have 5 years to play 4, regardless of scholarship or not.
To the 100% comment. That would be just like the NCAA to make a rule getting a player to 80% of a degree.

He's Johnny Manziel with much less talent and personality. Actually Manziel had a likeable side despite his antics. This guy does not.

I must be missing something… the math just doesn’t add up. 12 hour minimum per semester for 6 years + 1 in Mississippi. Plenty of players out there get advanced degrees in that timeframe. Even if he was doing the bare minimum he should have gotten some sort of general studies degree. I can only think he was floating around every major the school has to offer doing nothing but entry level coursework. 26 years old in classes full of 18 year olds … just wow. Peter Pan syndrome

So if I understand
Division I
  • 40 percent of required coursework for a degree must be complete by the end of the second year, 60 percent by the end of the third year and 80 percent by the end of their fourth year.
  • Student-athletes are allowed five years of eligibility and athletically related financial aid.
  • All Division I student-athletes must earn at least six credit hours each term to be eligible for the following term and must meet minimum grade-point average requirements related to the school’s GPA standards for graduation.

If he started out at UGA in the fall of 2017, then according to this requirement, Bennett must have had 80% of his degree credits earned by the fall of 2021 to be eligible to play. Thus, he should have had 100% of his credits earned by the fall of 2022 (using the 20% per year from the bolded above).
There's technically no 20%/year requirement here though. It just says 80% by end of 4th year, and at least 6 credit hours each term. I don't see a requirement that those credits be toward their degree. After he hit 80% he might've just taken some do-nothing courses to fulfill the 6 credit hours requirement.

I can't imagine UGA wouldn't be checking that their best players are academically eligible. They probably helped him game the rules so he had nothing in the way of football which explains why he wouldn't make it further than 80%.

I think they just said öööö it, the NCAA is a joke that won't do anything to us so we're not even going to pretend anymore. These guys are here for football, not school.

Even if you consider the Covid year a valid excuse, he should still have fulfilled the NCAA regulations for progress. Not being able to graduate says that he did not and should have been ineligible. It's time for the wus NCAA to enforce their regulations on EVERYBODY and quit giving a pass to the football factories.
Exactly.

The 20% per year is toward a degree, not just course hours completed. You have to make academic progress at a pace of at least 6 hours/semester.

However, you can’t do 6 sh forever, or you end up at 18 sh/year (or you end up taking over 7 years to graduate). 6 sh is the minimum allowed for football players in a fall semester. The other 18 have to be made up in spring and summer to maintain adequate progress.

Most Bachelor-level degree programs require 120 sh for completion. That’s 15 hours/semester, 2 semesters per year, for four years. At 20% per year, that’s 24 sh completed toward a degree each year.
