Swinney cashes in

Only four active head coaches have won national titles as head coaches: Saban, Swinney, Urban Meyer, and Jimbo Fisher.
That statistic still blows my mind. Nick Saban and Urban Meyer have won 80% of all national titles won by active coaches.

Better question....do they get to add a new name to this statistic this year?

Swinney won 100% of the one that counts, the latest one

Agreed, that is amazing. Even more impressive that each of them is doing it at two schools.

I'd definitely be willing to be bet that the answer to that question is no. Shit, I think the chances are decent that the next two are won by that group. All 4 programs are only getting better.

Within the context of there's only about 30 schools over the entire AP MNC era (80ish+ years) that have won a title and the top 10 (in terms of number of titles) have won about 80% of those, it's not unsurprising.

Basically, college football hasn't had anything resembling parity over its entire history so it's nothing magical about it. That's not to be taken like I'm saying they're not historically great coaches - just that they've done it at one those very, very few behemoths of the game.

Constrained as all teams are by the uncertainties of youth, I'm not sure how much better Bama can get.

Hate to play him ever year, but he does a darn fine job over there in Clemson. Glad he cashed in; he earned it. Sad he isn't gone.

And unfortunately I have a hard time thinking of a successful college coach less likely than Dabo to get lured to the NFL. Our only hope is to beat him.

Good for him for cashing in before ESPN has to back track on conference contracts. Eventually revenues will drop and salaries will have to follow.

It's possible this will happen but I think the bubble will more likely burst due to a challenge to the NFLPA's age requirement.

On a side note, I recall when Dabo was hired during CPJ's first year and laughing about the idea of promoting the WR coach to interim HC. For a few years he was mocked as a being a better cheerleader than HC. Good for him to get it together and breaking the myth that everything SEC was gold.

The only thing Dabo knows is how to take a pay cut and pay his coordinators more than the rest. He's not a qualified coach. But he's gamed the system at a school with low enough standards and fertile enough recruing grounds to make a name for himself. So props I guess. We've seen several times what him man up against CPJ results in.

As long as people get to vote confirmation bias into reality, parity among teams will never be reflected in the top spot.

I can't tell if this is butthurt or ignorance.

Dabo is a fine coach, a great recruiter, and outstanding motivator of players. He also hires well due to his aforementioned willingness to personally reap less financially. That's not dumb luck.... that's smart.

The fact that CPJ had gone toe to toe and beat Swinney's teams speaks to Johnson's coaching prowess rather than Swinney not being a good coach.

Dang dang good coach. When he was hired, I figured we would dominate Clemson for a while. He proved me wrong. I'm afraid he is there to stay. Hard to believe that only four active coaches have won the NC.

Being able to recruit well, hire good assistants, keep a program running smoothly, and, above all, win (multiple conference titles and a national title) is exactly what makes someone a qualified coach. Running a college football program is about more than just X's and O's. There are plenty of schools with money and low standards that don't do nearly as well as Clemson is doing under Dabo.

Dabo is a great head coach. Full stop.
