Tailgate Troubles

What really made me mad is that I park behind woodruff. Its a horrible parking spot. I mean its really bad and about 20 miles from the stadium. They, as of last week, started charging $15 to park there! $15!!!! for the worst parking place on campus. Its B.S.

Prolly a foreign nerd who speaks poor english, wears a fanny pack, and wakes up at 7:30AM on a Saturday to eat in the dining hall then study at his bedside desk for half of the day.

And to polish it off, he will possibly leave this country a la brain drain and take his degree, knowledge, and potential back to a foreign place.
I am pretty sure the brain drain is overall still towards the US. If you have stats on this, I am all ears to see. From my foreign Tech friends, a lot of them have stayed here and probably are going to stay for their life. Not only that, but they were the more successful students as well by a long shot in their classes. The best of the best come here.

Maybe you passed all your spelling tests with a 70. Good thing you don't need a license for that, just parallel parking.

Nearly accurate: handwriting and spelling were the only classes I got a C in before Tech. I also don't worry about the spelling and grammar police, especially when I am watching football while posting after 10 PM

My son lives next door in Perry. He said he never sees anyone enter or leave that building. He is not completely convinced that people actually live there.

He also said for a half case of natty lite and some smoked brats he'll hang out with you and act like you're family so the GTPD can't run you off.

Well, it isn't the police that are misbehaving. But that's not an bad theory of how to fix this.

As it stands, every tailgating group should hope that the other GT departments stand up to auxiliary services. Otherwise, they'll pick us off one-by-one.

You wonder why every student complains about 1) parking 2) dining and 3) housing. Look no further than auxiliary services. The only people who don't complain are the tools who join RHA, because no one else, not even SGA, will take them.

Excellent point. Those would be the three complaints I have against Tech, other than Calc 2.

But we must remember,

GTAA >> GT Aux Services
&
Dan Radakovich >> Whoever the heck is the head of Aux Services

Thought I'd update everyone.

Apparently
GT Athletics + GT Alumni Association (we'd been told by both that they were on our side and trying to work something out and spoken in person with people) !>> GT Aux Services

Seems like it all came to an end last night/this morning when we received a wonderful form letter from the Institute President. Pasting over to us what housing has been saying all along. Disappointing to say the least. Hope you all have better luck than we did, but I doubt we're the first ones who are going to be kicked out of our spot.

More disappointing from an alumni relations perspective that they send GTPD over to tell us to leave and we get a form letter from Peterson. Doesn't seem like a wise way to deal with a group of young alumns/donors, but what do I know.

So off we go, search the campus on gameday and try to find something remotely close to our current area, and not already occupied.

WHEN YOU SAY KICKING YOUR FANS AND SUPPORTERS IN THE TEEETH,
YOU'VE SAID IT ALL

Seriously, it's hard enough to find places to tailgate on an urban campus in the first place, do they really need to start cutting down on the places we can do it? It's six Saturdays a year, the students need to nut up and get over it(wow, it's sad to say that students have to get over people wanting to have social events....)

This reminds me of not letting people buy season tickets after the Georgia game last season. Had to wait for the LSU game to make sure that everyone knew just what they were getting into...you really want to make sure the fanbase feels bad about itself before you ask for money.

As a side note, if anyone on campus wants to run over a copy of Strunk and White's Elements of Style to the old Carnegie library, the new president needs a copy. If you can't do that, copying the section on complete/incomplete sentences would be helpful.

On the internets there is no need for style and good grammars. But I'd like our Institute President to do a little better.

Given that every department at Tech is literally its own fiefdom, and can only be overturned by the President, folks better watch their backs.

I hate the direction they're going with campus parking. You all know about their "master plan" for the next 5-10 years? They want to move all parking completely off campus. Like across the interstate and into the ghettos of home park. Tell me how that is a good idea? They've had massive complaints and protests since they unveiled this bulls*** plan, but they insist that they know what's best and we'll have to deal with it. It's kind of like, yeah, you all pay the money that keeps us going, and we really appreciate that, but f*** you. It's the same thing as the plan to tear out Quiznos, Wingnuts, and East side market int he North Ave Apartment complex to put in a new dining hall :puke: . They say that they want to give students more affordable eating options, truthfully they want to force everyone that they can to buy one of their extremely overpriced meal plans.

If you are a student and have a complaint about housing or auxillary services, why not e-mail Roz Meyers and Bud Peterson? See if they respond quickly to you---I'm sure student concerns are really driving those decisions (is Brittain going away or something)?

Yes I am, tried it, got a nice polite email saying that the school was taking the best direction in order to serve the students, etc, etc.

Brittain is staying, which is what we all don't understand. It's only a few hundred foot walking distance. The key is that in the Technique's story about it official statement from the school was something like "We are appalled to find that only 1/3 of the NAN residents have meal plans, and are being forced to eat at "expensive" restaurants such as Quiznos and Wingnuts"....which to most everyone seems to mean GTdining isn't making enough money and they need to find a way to force more people to buy their overpriced meal plans. I spoke to the manager at Quiznos briefly about it, and all she said was that it was GT's building and part of the contract was that Tech could remove them whenever they pleased, and as much as they hated it, they had to comply.

Well, you need to find the student leaders at Tech who aren't suckling at the administration's teet.

I love the part about "forced." Because they don't do that with freshman dining plans. Or tailgaters.

Wow, really? Wingnuts has went downhill quite a ways from when they started, but they used to be great. Another dining hall is a terrible idea, no one liked eating at them, I was on the 75 meals/semester as a freshman and I think I had 40 left at the end of the semester, and most of the 35 there was using the waffle maker (that they discontinued cause some idiot burned themselves).

I wanted to give everyone a heads up about some trouble we've had recently with our tailgate. About 50 fraternity alumni, friends, kids and family members, along with about 150 other folks in a couple of different groups, have been tailgating on the lawn at 4th Street Apts on Techwood for the last 6 or 8 years.

Last Saturday about an hour or so before kickoff we were visited by a few GTPD officers who, realising how ridiculous it was, asked us to move along. We complied, and have been trying to figure out why for the last few days. They have a few reasons, none of them that I think are very valid, pointing out isolated incidents that I've seen a handful of times if that and never a big enough problem to be addressed by anyone before.

Essentially housing is saying that they're enforcing a "long standing policy" that only dorm residents can use/be near the space around the dorms, and that people in the dorms shouldn't be disturbed by gameday activity (I'm curious about their plans to get BDS@HGF moved up the hill since its so close to east campus dorms, not to mention those RVs that cause such a ruckus).

Honestly I'm not sure what will come of this, but I don't think its a very good move, and I'm pretty disapointed that the powers that be at GT aren't putting housing in line and being more pragmatic about it. The gameday experience, at least closer to the stadium, at GT has improved significantly since we started setting up shop and I hate to see them "cracking down" on a good sized group of alumni, almost all of whom donate to TECH fund/Roll Call. I'm also left wondering whats next, and how we'll know we won't be asked to leave our next spot. Ademic buildings, the student center, the library, etc have just as much of an argument for quiet as the dorms do, if not more.

So just a heads up, hope this isn't going to start happening to everyone else, but I've got a sneaking feeling it will.

Anyone else having similar problems, or were we the first to get burned?

Have you written and sent any correspondence or called? I've found that a written letter usually has a greater impact cause you never really know who the hell you're talkin to

Just a thought and you've probably gone that route already

Write the AD... There's another thought

AD, Alumni Assoc President, Board of Trustees Chairman, Aux Services Director, and on up to the Institute President.

All these people contacted by letter or phone, and a few of them in person.

Worked every contact we could, and it is what it is. But yeah, we tried :)

They discontinued the waffle maker?!?!?! That was my clutch meal. A waffle, pizza, and ice cream. I guess I am glad I moved off campus for my last year. I hate GT housing.

Also, if they pull the Wingnuts/Quiznos crap I will be really pissed with Dining. Brittain is RIGHT NEXT TO THERE.

---------------

Also, sorry about your tailgate. Me and GTH lived in 4th street apts in 2005 and it was the "language house". Most were foreigners that couldn't care less about football. Don't ask me why we were stuck in there. Our hallway seemed to be the exception, as we all only spoke English.

I remember you guys would share Hot Dogs when we came out.

Yes, and do you remember that VT-Duke basketball game where Duke hit a halfcourt shot at the end to win it? I yelled in surprise and our douchebag RA actually came to my room and told me to be quiet. He also turned us in for drinking and was a general asshat.

Yeah, thankfully I was at the end of the hall, you were next to him.
