Talent

gsupantther says GSU in 99 could possibly give us a run for our money.

i assume this would mean they possibly had better depth at the QB position and also depth that was more experienced at running the Offense than our last years team and possibly this years team.

i'd say this is one example of how GSU may have had more talent at at least one position. why couldn't it be more? as in WR......where we are somewhat untested?

GSU had a damn good program in the late 90's and i just think its a possibility.

i think the comparison of GSU's skill guys relative to last years team it was debatable.
but i'm positive with this years team with AA,
Roddy, JN, Diesel, Hill, D. Thomas. there's no doubt that this team is hands down the most talented he's ever dealt with.

The 1999 backup QB, J. R. Revere, led them to the 2000 championship.

Having been a fan of both Tech and Southern since around 1983 (when the Southern team started again), I shudder at the thought of our worst teams facing Southern's best, particularly our 1994 team after Bill Lewis lost them (and before Rice showed him the door). We has totally squandered any "talent" advantage that a 1-A team might have over a 1-AA team by then.

But to Lewis' credit, I believe he did open the season with a big win over Furman before tanking the rest of the season. That's better than Curry did against them (0-1-1 in the games I remember), and since he beat them handily, it's also better than Curry did against Western Carolina in 1985 with his best team. Also better than Ross did against Furman in 1991 when we had to recover a fumble in scoring position to beat them less than a year removed from our MNC. Or than Johnson did against GW last year with our latest super talented team.

Yeah I did. A friend of my families was one of his back-ups. I even went to some games.

The you'll recognize his career stats for the CFL:
53.4% completions for 40,534 yards
1059 carries for 8,043 yards for 7.6 YPC average

That's pretty gaudy, and better than Joe did in the Arena League.

I don't judge college players by what they did after college. Tracy Hamm had some gaudy stats at GSU. It still doesn't mean as a GSU senior in 1986 he would start over Tommy Frazier in 1994. Totally different class of college player. If we are talking about the greatest option QB's of all time in college, Tracy Hamm may get a foot note compared to guys like Frazier and Tony Rice.

I'd take Tracy Ham in his prime over Nesbitt from 2008.

It remains to be seen how Nesbitt will compare to Ham in 09 and 2010.

For that matter imagine what Lil Joe would have done in this offense.

I think our size and physicality would allow us to push GSU 99 around on the field. Hamm and Co would probably still move the ball but I think we'd prevail.

Like we pushed Gardner-Webb around the field?

Well I think we did dominate physically in that game. We just had no offense because our quarterback was a drop back passer trying to run the 3O.

In hindsight, I wish we had gone to a I formation and ran basic big 10 plays until we pounded them down. Also, at that point our O line play was still sucking the big ding dong.

I didn't see that game. I listened to it on the radio. There wasn't a lot of physical domination being described. I do remember thinking to myself that if G-W took it to overtime, they were going to beat us.
