TAMU getting heat for not interviewing a token black man

Might we get the same fallout. All our candidates look to be the status quo.

I'm tired of this Black HC crap. Blacks make up about what 10% of the total population yet, if you listen to these ****ing liberal PC douchebags, they should make up 50% of the NCAA's head coaches.

I don't care if a coach is black, white, green, yellow, blue, ArchiTECH, or whatever, if he can coach and kick ass, then hire him. Race should play ZERO factor in a decision. Anyone who thinks race should play a factor is by definition: racist.

You catch if you don't hire them, then you catch when they get fired. I could care less, just do not tell us who we need to hire.

I think it probably is still necessary to force schools to interview minority candidates if for no reason other than to get their names out there so they can be considered for future openings. There is still a lot of racism in the south, especially among the "good ol' boys" fraternity that makes up a lot of the higher ups in colleges. In the NFL I don't think it is quite as big of an issue, because it is so ultra-competitive and performance based, but in college it is more politics and connections than performance. Blacks may not make up a big percentage of the American population, but they do make up a large percentage of players in football, and it is odd that they are so under represented in coaching. Hopefully in the future it won't be necessary, and yes, it is racist in a way...two wrongs to try to make a right.

Unfortunately we live in a world that is not color blind especially in the South. We live in a place where blacks weren't allowed by law 1-2 generations ago to attend GT. We live in a city where the average 18 year old man has een arrested and has a greater than 3% chance of being murdered by the time he is 25.

We cheer for a school and in a conference that is made up of more than 50% of black players yet have had one black heacd coach in our league ever in the ACC. We recruit players whose mothers work 2-3 jobs at minimum wage and who never receive a decent education from the government.

We live in a very broken world from a racial standpoint. East Cobb white guys think calculus is a hurdle. We recruit more guys who know gangs and crack and generational poverty are much greater hurdles.

If you hate racism, then aren't you inclined to do something about it? Can you say you don't have a racist bone but not feel obligated to interview a black for a job, or feed a homelss man, or donate time and money to black kids who statisticaly have a better chance of not making it to middle school than they do passing a GT class?

I want to be a leader in my life to right the wrongs of racism. For that reason, I am a GT fan. I abhor the N-calling raicsts of the South who I grew up with. I want to find guys like Dungy, Strong, etc. who have exhibited incredible leadership and risen above the horrible statistics.

also, from a pure statistical standpoint, the NFL has proven when given a chance African americans can be very successful as coahces. We read here and everywhere coaches get frsuatrated witht those who didn't play the game telling them how to coahc the game. Well, the truth is over 50% of D1 players are black. Over 70% of NFL players are black. The truth is black men are better football players than white men statistically. And the smart black guys who have played the game should be able to coach as well if not better than their white counterparts.

Sociologically, blacks vote for Democrats at a 90% rate EVEN when they are more socially conservative than the average white person. Why? well there are a lot of reasons but as bill Mahrer said at the end of the day black folks by and large voted for Jesse, and they'll vote for Obama. and guess what? they might like richt but they would choose a black head coach over the white head coach 90% of the time or more if all was equal.

I understand why this happens. I grew up in East Point and riverdale, have worked with big Brothers, liked Hosea williams, have some great friends who are black, etc. I abhor racism and the shadow it has cast on my home state and city. Being a leader to make this colorblind society would make me proud and oh by the way we just might get a great head coach who loves ATL and would be loyal to GT. and my guess is the 90% of African american players that UF, UGA, AU, Bama, etc. that are going to those schools might strongly consider GT if we had a strong black coach.

I mean black folks voted over 80% for Sharpton. was John thompson a great head coach or did he get kids to come play for him because of his stature and his skin color and where his school was? JT was not half the coach Dean Smith was in my opinion but was as successful at a Jesuit School in DC.

The fact is there just aren't a lot of qualified black coaches for the Tech job. I would be curious to know what percentage of Black players actually attempt coaching compared to white players?

FWIW, my explanation is that there's so much more job turnover in the NFL than in college. More jobs open mean more chances to move up the ladder, even for assistants. It's a pretty novel thing in college to see so many schools firing their coaches.

There's also the fact that, while most of the players at the highest levels are black, high school and college football in general have a majority white players. And it was even more skewed 20-30 years ago when today's HCs were likely to play football.

I understand the history of racism, but I just don't see it as a major factor today in head coaching decisions. Well, except for Bama going for Shula instead of Croom, which does look like an extremely dumb decision in retrospect.

Drive around in Atlanta or Prince George's County in Maryland and it doesn't take long to realize that plenty of blacks today are doing quite well. It certainly was not true a generation or two ago, but today we live in an extremely global competitive community. People want and hire smart competitive people. This is just not an issue like it used to be.

Now, the real question one must ask is why are there few college head coaching candidates? It would be of interest to find out how many college players, white and black, went into coaching soon after college. Are the percentages consistent with head coaches later? Like it or not, but few players make great head coaches partly because they spend their youth playing and not learning coaching.

Anyway, I agree with your sentiments, but there is so much more information needed.

Dear Mr. Gator,
Having once been a tall black women, ArchiTECH can appreciate your implicit reference to the plurality and diversity of ArchiTECH and his/her innate ability to "coach up" young men.

For the record, ArchiTECH has not (how shall we say..."officially") been offered the "position" of HEAD football coach at the "I" - HOWEVER, the rumors you hear are, in fact, TRUE. ArchiTECH will be the next head coach of the beloved Jackets.

ArchiTECH prefers his/her privacy during these intense days as the final negotiations take place between ArchiTECH and this Mr. Rad person. However, ArchiTECH was given some dumb-ass, apparently phony cell phone number by this Rad person's secretary when ArchiTECH asked how to get "hold" of so-called Mr. Rad so that he and ArchiTECH could find some quiet time to discuss our future together. In fact, SHE WAS RUDE to ArchiTECH!

love,
ArchiTECH

I think race should have no effect on the decision, the job of choosing a head coach falls under one criteria, the best fit. The way I look at it is that while being progressive and hiring a black coach would be great, if they don't fit than they won't be helping us and your not going to be helping them, your just putting them in a position they aren't ready for. If they really want to move up than they need to gain the needed respect on their own and do the job better than the last guy. They need to end up there on their own merit and not because someone thinks that to be politically correct we need to hire or interview them. People gain respect by proving themselves and not being babied and forcing people to respect them. But I do defiantly think that it is not too far out that black coaches could come into college and I do think that they can be just as good and better than white coaches. And with that said I think a black coach could do great in Atlanta and even pick up a really big fan base of people that would come see games just for that reason, but I think we need to worry more about what the coach looks like on paper and on the field not what their skin color is. Another issue with this is that most football players are black, if were going to recruit more black coaches than why shouldn't we recruit white football players? I think people need to worry more about who has the most talent give them the position and ignore the issue of what race they are. If everyone has an equal opportunity than things will balance themselves out but forcing people to hire a black coach instead of a white coach just because of skin color is just as racist as hiring a white coach because of his skin color and I feel it perpetuates racism.

The coaching profession is an extreme example of the good-ol'-boy network. If you side against the BCA on this you are just not being fair. They are not demanding that every school hire a black coach, they are only asking that you give one or more black candidates a chance in the interview process.

This is not reverse racism or racism, or affirmative action, it is an attempt to break a vicious cycle of the good-ol'-boy network that has historically isolated black coaches from the entire process, particularly in the South.

If it offends your sensibilities for us to go out of our way to merely interview a black coach then I would suggest your sensibilities are f***ed up.

I know they arn't asking every school to hire a black coach, and I know they are only asking that black coaches be given a chance in the interview process. I do think they should be given a chance but I do not think they should be sought after by AD's while they sit back and wait for a call. I feel that if a minority wants to get in than they need to be the one to let the AD's know about the their interest in the job and ask for the consideration. In this case I think that would even give the black coach the advantage because it does show that he wants to be at the school and that he in fact is a less traditional coach and will go into the job and truly try to make a name for him self and team. Now I haven't really looked much into the issue but I doubt many people could come up with many instances(recently) where a black coach sought out a job and wasn't even granted an interview. Like all things in life, you must step up and not wait around for someone to hand you what you need. To summarize, I think the job of getting into the profession should be handled by the individual people and not by a group of sympathizers. If someone wants a job than they need to stand up and fight for it and do better than the person standing next to them regardless of color.

race should not be a factor in this decision. the only way to be truly colorblind is to hire the coach based on their abilities and if he's the right fit for GT. The damn media and all of those liberal bastards have no right to tell GT, TAMU, or any other school who to hire and who not to hire.

all of those liberal bastards have no right to tell GT, TAMU, or any other school who to hire and who not to hire.

That's true - but they do have the right to make a lot of noise about it in the media when a school doesn't even consider black candidates, so that young black men considering becoming players or assistant coaches there know where the school stands.

and we have the right to call liberal bastards liberal bastards

I believe liberals are purposely obnoxious on such matters because they benefit politically from races not getting along.
