Tar heel fans

When I lived in Greensboro, that was the same case -- noone was a Duke fan, they were either State or CH fans with a smattering of Wake fans as well, being as how WS is right nextdoor

Same in the Raleigh Durham area. You see a lot more UNC blue/State red than Duke blue. Duke might be the only program in the nation with a larger fanbase outside of its state than inside(and by that I mean people who would say Duke is their favorite team.)
I'd assume there are more UNC fans than State, at least in the Triad and Triangle areas, but I'm not sure it's by much. In football in particular State fans are crazy, even thought they've never really done anything.

I lived in Wilmington a couple of years and to me it was just like here, UNC was the average Joe's team, NCState had probably more fans that Tech does proportionately in GA and Wake and Duke were snob schools that very few in state students went to. But NCS fans were a distinct minority to the Tarheel blue. I was so put off about it that I rooted for Marquette when they beat the Heels in '77 or '78 in the basketball championship. Also, in the southeast Carolina area the ECU Pirates had about as many fans as NCstate did.

Well working in IBM, I see a lot more State fans than UNC, simply because State has a halfway decent engineering program. If there's more UNC fans than State, it's not by much.

The other thing I've noticed is that State fans have an inferiority complex with regards to UNC, much like we do. Pretty interesting to see it from an outside perspective.
