Tashard Choice will have 1700+ rushing yards this season

For sure, I don't expect us to go undefeated. But like you said it's nice to have a team with coaches and leaders who believe that we can.

When I was in grad school I remember talking to one of our players while waiting for a bus to take us up 'the hill'. He told me the coaches thought they could go undefeated that year. I thought to myself that it was great that they had the players believing that, but honestly took the player to just be gullible. We later crushed Nebraska in a bowl game and got some crystal football shaped thing from Pepsi in a post game awards ceremony.

I'm not saying we are headed toward a championship season; but experienced coaches usually have a better idea of what they have in house than all the media types. If our coaching staff really thinks this team has potential to go undefeated, this should at a minimum be a great year.:fingersx:

honestly guys.... is it not just a TAD BIT unrealistic to hope for a NC when you aren't even ranked in the top 25 to start the season?

when is the last time a pre-season unranked team won a national title?

Unless I'm an idiot, I'd say that would have been GEORGIA TECH in 1990.

We're fans, we're allowed to be unrealistic.

Going undefeated is unlikely, but if we do go undefeated, beating ND and UGA on our way to an ACC championship, we'll be playing in the BCS championship game. Only way we could go undefeated and be snubbed is if there were 2+ other undefeated teams, and they came from a group of USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, an SEC team.

so, if true... it happens once in 16 years? the odds aren't very great of it happening again.

Maybe you misunderstand.

GT is ALWAYS underrated pre-season, unlike ND who is ALWAYS overrated. It has to do with the fact that we don't have a journalism school, and you do. So saying Tech has no chance at a NC because we're not ranked pre-season is a hollow argument.

I could just as easily say that ND has zero chance of winning a NC because they've FAILED win one in the last 17 seasons that they were ranked pre-season, including that season that Tech won it.

no, i understand.

ACTUALLY, you are very wrong:

don't believe everything you read about ND... because most of it is baseless whining.

most of the media surrounding ND does not come from ND alumns if that is what you are insinuating. media surrounding ND is so prevalent b/c ND draws great ratings... love em or hate em... they produce revenue.

So saying Tech has no chance at a NC because we're not ranked pre-season is a hollow argument.
i didn't say Tech didn't have a chance. i said it's highly unlikely. i'd like to see the history of exactly how many teams have won NC's when they werent ranked in the preseason. i'm sure statistics will say that the chances are slim indeed. you read too much into my statement and deduced something that i never intended -- you took my statement to the extreme. read my words at face value.

I could just as easily say that ND has zero chance of winning a NC because they've FAILED win one in the last 17 seasons that they were ranked pre-season, including that season that Tech won it.
actually, ND hasn't been ranked in the top 25 for the past 17 seasons. if you take the 17 seasons where they WERE ranked in the top 25, 1988 would be one of those seasons. regardless, you just made the point that if a team is ranked in the top 25, they should win the NC. you tried to negate my post and make a point, but you left it too open-ended. being in the pre-season top-25 doesn't guarantee a NC... but, historically, being in the top-25 exponentially boosts the odds.

prove me wrong through statistics if you disagree.

How's this for a statistic:

100% of the National Championships Georgia Tech has won in my lifetime have come when we weren't ranked pre-season.

Here's another one, although I'm only guessing and don't want to bother looking it up:

In my lifetime, 100% of the National Championships won by teams who weren't ranked pre-season, were won by Georgia Tech.

What am I proving? Certainly I'm not proving that it's easier to win a NC if you're not ranked, nor have I ever insinuated that. What I am proving, very clearly, is that Georgia Tech is an outlier to the trend you're referencing, and thereby not subject to its indications.

Quite simply, GT's starting rank has no effect on whether or not we play for the NC. No matter where we start, we must go undefeated, win the ACC, and assume that there are either 1 or zero teams from other BCS conferences who also have no losses. That's our formula, and it's a formula that is guaranteed 100% to provide us a NC game, and it has nothing to do with starting rank.

Starting rank for Tech is irrelevant.

What I am proving, very clearly, is that Georgia Tech is an outlier to the trend you're referencing, and thereby not subject to its indications.

in other words, an anomaly.

and while, i agree that starting rank is irrelevant, history shows that ranked teams have a MUCH higher chance at winning NC's.

in other words, an anomaly.
Yup.

and while, i agree that starting rank is irrelevant, history shows that ranked teams have a MUCH higher chance at winning NC's.
Sure, because starting rank is usually somewhat indicative of a team's talent. But that's never been true of Tech, because we have zero journalists, UGA has a zillion journalists, and the northeast / west coast media markets pump up their darlings pre-season.

I don't mean to sound cross with you, Oatmeal, you're actually a pretty good poster and I hope you stick around after the ND game. But it annoys me when Tech fans talk about our starting rank, saying it's indicative of anything whatsoever, so I can't very well let a non-Tech fan do it. Hope you understand. :)

It's not like we're not close to being ranked. By points, we're 27th in the AP and 26th in the coaches poll. If we win on Saturday, we should be ranked around 20.

Actually, at the begining of the 1990 season, Tech was unranked in any pre-season polls. In fact, Tech did not get ranked by the AP until the October 1 poll at #25 (UP at #18). And the rest, as they say, is history....
