Tech/Bama Rivalry

I know damn well where the game was played Foggy. I went to Tuscaloosa, visited with the girl friend of a friend of ours at Tech, stayed over night, and went to the game at Legion Field the next day, after buying a pint from one of the "houses" near the stadium. I never said where the game was played, onloy that I went to Tuscaloosa, which I did.

Sorry you get get so riled but your post did indicate that it was Tuscaloosa. You said and I'll paraphrase it, next year I went to Tuscaloosa and we got whipped.

I said I WENT to Tuscaloosa and I did! I never stated where the game was played becasue I post for fun, without thinking everything through exactly over something 45 years ago. And who gives a flyin' f**k anyway except you who has more time for this sort of thing than I do!

Who gives a dang that you went to Tuscaloosa. I lived there for 3 years age 18 -21 and dated many young ladies there. So what? If you want to be riled be riled because I correct your apparent reference to the game being in Tuscaloosa. I went to the game in B'ham and saw the whole thing now get your butt in a wad if you want, do I care, not really but next time say what you mean. I will say this in your defense sometimes it's not easy to say exactly whats on ones mind.

We need to get some things straight. It was on a pass play near the side line and Chick had taken his helmet off, the play was well over when Holt did indeed hit him in the cheek bone and broke it. Chick was, after he left Tech, drafted by a team I believe in the old AFL. The game was played in Birmingham not Tuscaloosa. In those day Birmingham because of Auburn and Bama playing home games in Legion Field called themselves The Football Capital of the South.

QFT. Old Foggy's on to this one. Videos exist. This wasn't personal foul. It was Bear Bryant telling one of his goons to eff up our best player. One of the biggest reasons we didn't associate with them for years.

oldfoggy was pullin some serious trim back in the day...

So, umm, conservative offense, stingy defense, reliance on player discipline, less emphasis on player emotion, stress on player character, no running up the score ... any of that ring a bell?

Chan's teams were certainly less disciplined than Dodd's teams. I already mentioned that above. But the blueprint for their wins was the same. Unless I'm missing something ..? All the stories of the great Dodd wins I've heard sound like Tech vs Top Ten Auburn or Tech vs Top Ten Miami under Chan.

I'm not saying Chan = Dodd. Don't put words in my mouth. I'm saying they're the same conservative style of football. No? What am I missing?

Tell me what I'm missing, Gnats.

conservative? yes

same? no

its all about calling the right plays at the right times. Dodd did, Chan couldn't.

I have never understood Dodd being called conservative. In many ways he was. But in many ways he was daring. He was the 1st to use the tackle eligible play. He opened up the run with the belly series. He gave safeties when necessary, a daring move when he was ahead by only a few, the 6-4 SMU game comes to mind. Best game I have ever seen in my 70+ years. Tech ahead 6-0 Pepper knelt down in the EZ not once but twice to win 6 - 4. Yes he was conservative but at the same time daring when most teams were conservative. Remember he did win many games when Tech scored more than 30 points.

Very good point Dodd taught his QBs well Chan never did. Dodd had a way with the fans, Chan obviously felt fans were a necessary evil.

So Pepper was Dodd's OC?

Not hardly he was the QB as I recall! Could be that I don't remember correctly but if I am incorrect about the QB correct me with the name of the QB in that game.

EDIT: The game was 1953 Pepper was listed as a back. I also look at the entire schedule for several years with Dodd has HC. Tech on average with an 11 game schedule had 7 of 12 games where Tech scored more than 20 points.

WRONG ! According to Dodd from his book "Dodd's Luck" on pages 221-222, the incident occurred during a Tech punt to Alabama. After a fair catch was called by Alabama’s Billy Richardson, Graning, who was away from the ball toward the sideline, relaxed when the ball was caught. Play over. That's when Holt slammed his elbow underneath Graning's face mask.

By the way, there was a lot more damage than just a broken cheek bone. According to Tech's physician the diagnosis was: "fracture of the alveolar process (facial bones), five missing upper front teeth and the majority of the remaining front teeth broken, fracture of the nasal bone, fracture of the right auxiliary sinus, fracture of the right zygomatic process (bone under the right eye), cerebral concussion, and possible fracture of the base of the skull." This injury basically ended Graning's football playing career at Tech.

At least you got the location of the game correct. It was played in Birmingham.

Were we an option team back in Dodd's day? I know we ran it out of the wishbone during the Pepper era.
Well Knox, it's kind of a complicated question to answer. Until 1964, there was only limited substitution or everyone had to go both ways. This meant that offenses had to be fairly conservative because defense dominated. Dodd emphasized kicking and defense because of his background at Tennessee. He believed in putting the other team in a hole let them make a mistake and capitalize. General Neyland would have been proud of him. Because of the nature of limited substitution/one platoon football (the rules changed back and forth several times during this era) it was extremely difficult to overcome mistakes. Dodd believed in smart football but would take chances if circumstances warranted it. Hope this helps to answer your question.

But, in the final analysis, the truth can never be avoided.

Bear Bryant never had the courage to discipline holt.

It's possible that Dodd like me was aged and his memory was possibly a little shot. The films tell the real story. I've seen the films and I suggest someone post and link the play, films tell the real story. I was about middle of the stadium (Legion Field), my memory also may be shot as well. But I remember a pass play. The films have a different angle than I had so they tell a very good tale of what really happened to Graning, as for the injury it was not only bad it was devastating.

As for disciplining Holt, in the bowl game against Arkansas they put Holt out of the game as I had predicted. I believe the coach of Arkansas was one of our boys. Bama won the game but Holt was on the sidelines watching not playing.
