Tech in Top 10

I'm telling you, in every category except for yards rushing, we're exactly where we were last year or better than where we were last year. We put up 400-something yards of offense on a team that only let BC put up 50, and we've only lost ONE game.

It's not pretty, and it's not getting praise, but we're actually doing well.

UNC will be the time to prove that we belong back in the ACC race and in the rankings, and the next few games on the road leading up to VT on October 17th will show that we're still a good team... but first things first,

time to beat the Heels...

I am very dissapointed in how we've played thus far. As a fan, I think a successful year is a national title. High expectations? Yes. But anyone who does anything but win it all really is just second best or worse. I know it's hard to recruit the level of talent for an academic school like tech, but that's one reason i liked coach Johnson. He seems to expect to win.

Once you lose one, generally, unless you are a big time school, your year is over. And Tech doesn't look to have what it takes to compete nationally. But our year isn't over if they somehow miraculously turn things around. Our schedule has alot of opportunities to jump up in the standings. So win out, and we are right in it. I know that is overly optomistic, but that's how i am. And if we continue to lose, I will still watch. But man I'd love for us to be in the mix of things in Dec....It's been too long.

So how do you think you get to be a 'big time school'? Winning national championships every year? Nope.

How many NC's has UGA won lately? How many NC's has LSU won lately? How many NC's has VPI won lately?

The reason these teams are 'big time schools' is because when they don't win the NC (which is very hard to do), they finish the year with 10 or more wins. Proving that even when they don't win it all, they are still very very good.

If we can finish this year 11-1 or 10-2 then we will have started the process of proving we are very good..which will only help us in years to come in our NC endeavor.

I agree winning a NC should be the ultimate goal, but if you can't do that, do the things that will help you get there.

To say you are disappointed in how we've played after only one loss to a very good Miami team, and a win over a very good rival is a bit absurd.

+1. If you have expectations that high you better take up a new passion or hobby. That is unrealistic at any school.

Go root for the japanese guy who rules the eating contests. He wins every time he touches a hot dog.

Alas, even Takeru Kobayashi is not immune to failure. He has finished a disappointing 2nd place in Nathan's Hot-Dog Eating Contest the past three years and is currently ranked #3 in the world by the International Federation of Competitive Eating.

Is 2 in the past 6 years not enough (03, 07)?

2 in 10 is still not the kind of odds that Gaguy seems to be implying that he wants.

My point was that in the other 8 years they were putting up a lot of W's on the final line.

I think he has actually met his match in Joey Chestnut.

America dominates again!

On July 4, 2009, Joey Chestnut outlasted Kobayashi again, by consuming a new world record of 68 hot dogs and buns and winning his third consecutive title.

I actually watched the competition this year because I was bored waiting before we were leaving to go somewhere (wife getting ready)....I thought I was going to be sick.:puke:

I heard the 'announcers' mention reversal of fortune several times. Seeing Joey jumping up and down to pack the hot dogs down disturbed me.:ugh:

I think it's because the ACC has played tougher competition in the first three weeks.

Yeah, we will see if it holds up through the year.

If Miami is the best team (as computers say) then it is not crazy that we would still be top ten.

I'm not getting TOO excited by computer rankings though until we have about three more games played.

Yeah, but it is an example of adapting. All the American eaters were big honking fat guys when Kobayashi started dominating. Then new guys like Chestnut started winning when we figured out that being fat isn't even an advantage for eating.

Other eaters eventually figured out Kobayashi and copied his blueprint, which is to soak the buns in water and eat them separately from the weiners. This approach minimizes gas in the stomach. Can't eat and burp at the same time.

It won't hold up against the hot dog eating speed of the SEC.

But.....rushing is 75% of our offense. What if I said that only one of my four investment accouts is down since 2007, but it's the one that holds 75% of my money?

You realize that no GT coach has ever won more than 1 national championship. If PJ leaves with 1 national title in however many years he will be coaching here (I would like to think about 15 or so) then I will be happy. Winning national championships often isn't something GT has done ever like Notre Dame or Alabama or recently Florida. GT is about playing for the marbles very very occasionally despite HUGE recruiting challenges because the planets align with a great coach and a great team. To expect more than that is unrealistic.

With that said, if PJ can bring 2+ national titles, put up 9 in a row against the mutts, and win the conference about 1 in 3 years then Dodd will have a run for his money as the best coach in GT history.

If he does all that at Tech (in addition to his existing accomplishments) he'll be in the conversation for greatest coach of all time, anywhere.
