Tech in Top 10

If he does all that at Tech (in addition to his existing accomplishments) he'll be in the conversation for greatest coach of all time, anywhere.

Frankly I doubt it:

1. ACC coach
2. Bear Bryant
3. High School Gimmick Offense
4. Bear Bryant

If PJ can win say 6+ national titles at GT then perhaps discussions would start but a few coaches have gotten that many already (Bear Bryant, Knute Rockne). And 6+ aint gonna happen anyways, in fact 2+ is a stretch.

Could the Bear have won all those titles at modern day Tech? Not a chance in the world. Winning 2 NCs at modern-era Tech and beating UGA 9 times in a row would be one of the most incredible coaching feats in history. I can't think of any other accomplishment in CFB that even comes close.

I agree but on top of the fact that the numbers are lower, being an ACC school has built in bias. Everyone will say "well he only got to the national championship because he coached in the weak ACC". I think Dodd would have wiped the floor with Bryant if they were forced to swap schools because of Tech's inherent challenges but I can't go back in time.

I think everyone misunderstood me, or maybe i didn't phrase it well (probably the latter). I don't expect Tech to win a title every year. If they could win one out of ever ten years and be really competitive during the other years that would make me happy. Even a few down years (3 or 4 losses) is okay along the way. Top tier teams go into each season (usually) with a goal of winning it all. All I am saying is that it's positive to have high expectations. The first loss of a season always depresses me initially because I realize that hope is likely gone.

And yes, we have played very poorly all year. We beat Clemson on special teams touchdowns, a little luck and a bad holding call. I think we have the talent and coaching to turn it around. Hopefully Sat. begins that turnaround.

So how do you think you get to be a 'big time school'? Winning national championships every year? Nope.


I agree winning a NC should be the ultimate goal, but if you can't do that, do the things that will help you get there.

To say you are disappointed in how we've played after only one loss to a very good Miami team, and a win over a very good rival is a bit absurd.

Big time schools are competitive on a continual basis and win the title occasionally. They finish in the top ten regularly. I wasn't saying for our program to be successful we have to win it every year.

I totally agree with the fact we should be doing things that get is closer to that goal.

And I don't think it's absurd to be disappointed. We have played poorly in all three games. The Clemson win was only because of two special teams touchdowns and a bad holding call. We couldn't move the ball at all in the second half and they looked like the greatest show on turf in the second half. And not much needs to be said about Miami. Going into this year, I thought we had a top ten team by years end. Through three games we aren't playing that way, thus the disappointment.....

Bear Bryant, himself, said that Dodd was the best game day coach of his time. Probably true. Eventually, Paul Johnson will be right there with him.
