ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech will play Georgia Southern in football for the first time ever in 2015, Yellow Jacket athletic director Dan Radakovich announced today.

The Yellow Jackets and Eagles, who have no previous meetings in football, have agreed to an early September date in Atlanta. Terms of the one-game contract will be determined at a later date.

Georgia Southern has been one of the nation's most successful and tradition-rich Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams. Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson coached the Eagles for five years, including I-AA national championships in 1999 and 2000. He also spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern.

"Georgia Southern is a special place to me," Johnson said. "I lived in Statesboro for nine years and we were fortunate to have a great deal of success there.

"Playing Georgia Southern makes perfect sense. They are a high-quality opponent and there will be a tremendous amount of interest in the game within the state of Georgia."

Georgia Southern joins Tulane, Georgia and Syracuse on Tech's tentative 2015 non-conference schedule.

I think this is a near perfect out-of-conference schedule.

Syracuse---member of the Big Least, a BCS conference
Tulane---one of Tech's oldest rivals
Georgia Southern---a I-AA school that will interest everyone in the state of Georgia.

Another thought...we are basically playing GSU because of CPJ.

Which also means that CPJ thinks he will still be here in 6 years.

Well, Georgia Southern plays at Navy next year for the same reason.

True but I think CPJ will stick around for a season or two to "prove" his system works with the big boys. Unless GT finishes the season as a top 5 team I don't see him leaving.

I'd be scared to see what he could do at say an LSU or Florida with the recruits he could get there w/o the academic issues at Tech ...

Not a good idea. GSU is too good and they know our offense too well.

They haven't run the triple since Mike Sewak left, I believe in 2004. Don't they run the "Hatch Attack," which is some kind of Air Raid offense?

Will be interesting to see that Air Raid Offense Hatcher runs.

It doesn't seem likely he will leave any time soon. I think it would take some amazing kind of success, like in the National Title hunt at the end of season, plus an amazing job off, like Florida or USC with great terms, and it won't be in the next 3 or 4 years.

I can only wish that Hatcher is not there, that means that he did so well (deep playoff run, multi time conference champs) that he was plucked up. And hey, we might return to the flexbone! (yeah right I wish)

I've been wanting this for years and years and finally I will get to see my two fav teams play!

Also, GSU could be in the SunBelt by then, who knows this might not be a FBS vs. FCS game after all.

What's wrong with them knowing our offense? I think it will make it a better game. I'd rather play them then Wafford or South Carolina State again. Cupcakes are not the way to go out of conference. Show some balls and play someone.

Because we won't get any more credit for playing a difficult 1AA team than we will for playing a terrible 1AA team. We don't want a "good game" against a team we are supposed to blow out. We want to blow them out and use it as a rest period for our starters. See: our season opener this year. The goal is to win a championship.

Yeah, that was exactly the reason to not play them for so long.

Added to that was the recruiting problem. It does not help us to make GSU a more viable alternative for Georgia prospects. That means more competition for recruits.

On the other side, it is all upside for GSU. They can lose a good game and get a moral victory and still "win". They can position themselves possibly even move up to FBS with a good showing at the higher level.

This is definitely a favor for GSU.
