Ted Roof

I actually think our defensive linemen aren't bad. But too often we're using only three of them and they're getting double teamed when they are the only guys rushing the QB. Ted Roof had some bad defenses, but the triple option helped keep the defense off the field longer. Collins needs to take over as the DC since he has a background as a DC from MSU and UF. Our defense is our Achilles heel and something needs to change fast.

No way to tell but I thought I saw some give up by defensive players late in the game. Our best linebacker, in my opinion, seemed uninterested in shedding blocks to make a play.

1) Are we learning that defense is basically all about talent? GT hasn’t been good in a long time. Hasn’t mattered who the coach is.

2) I do worry that this defense has lost a ton of confidence and is playing on fumes now. I think the Pitt game blew their confidence and the coaches have not gotten it back.

I do wonder if we are running too complicated a defensive backfield not unlike Groh. You never see our dbackfield making athletic plays. It's all about going and tackling a wide open receiver.

I am not for bringing Ted back; but I agree it would be an improvement. Did we have a defense this bad under CPJ? Maybe we did and I have blocked it from memory.
500+ yards, 30 first downs given up in a 43-20 loss to Duke in 2017. Duke finished 5-6 that year, 2-5 in conference. That's with us running an offense that limits the other team's possessions also. Same year Miami bubble screen bubble screen bubble screen bubble screen.

630+ yards, 26 first downs given up in a 48-20 loss to UNC in 2016. UNC was good that year, but we had TOP advantage that game. UNC had 353 passing and 283 rushing. Couldn't stop anything. We beat #14 VT, UVA, UGAg, and UK to end that year. So we had a good team, but coaching on defense apparently was non-existent in that UNC game.

"It's hard to coach defense now, because there are so many run-pass concepts in what everybody does," Saban said. "I mean, it's really, really hard to coach the secondary ... because you get so many mismatches back there."
“It used to be that good defense beats good offense. Good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore," Saban told ESPN on Friday.
"I'm telling you. It ain't that way anymore."
"But we just have to make sure we have an offense that's that way and that explosive, which we have."

I believe the defense can do much better and has been basically putrid a few times this year. My thoughts on where we have the ability to improve our results lie more on the Offense. Mainly because that is where we do have playmakers.

seen this before late in games - not first time. Could be fatigue but .......
