Tenuta

Well, this might be your first clue:

"COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- In his first career start, Chris Turner threw for 255 yards,"

Dreadful is too strong a word; but it is hard to think of our secondary as a strength of the defense. For a 'gritz blitz' defense to work well you need a couple of lock down corners who can play man-to-man with anyone. I don't think our DB's are as bad as some feel they are; but our scheme asks a lot out of them, perhaps too much out of the ones we presently have. Gritz Blitz is great, until you come up against a team that can exploit it.

Completely wrong. We zone blitz dude, we don't play ANY man on the corners. I'm not saying they are great, but JWD is a good DB and our safeties are pretty good. But when you play zone there are holes that the QB and receivers can find if the blitz doesn't get to them. We also have a problem with the LBs who don't blitz filling their area. So no, that line doesn't tell me much about our DBs,

I never said he should be the next HC... are you sure you don't have me confused with someone else?
Yes, sorry, after further review-view-iew, GTKyle-kyle-yle hasn't made a single serious nomination for a new HC. Plenty of criticisms of others' recommendations, but no serious nominations.

Plenty? I think I just commented once.

Hmm, did I say we play men on the corners. Someone asked how to 'fix' our secondary. I'm suggesting that since we blitz as much as we do, we need at least two DB's who can shut down a reciever one-on-one. It's a tall order, wave a magic wand and get Deion Sanders twins on both sides of the field.

You could also say we don't "gritz blitz" because that was a Glanville scheme which was more aggressive in the secondary. And like this Tenuta blitz scheme would occassionally get burned.

As for JWD, I think he takes too much flack on this board. I see him as an average DB who makes some good plays and then gets beat on occassion. People tend to not remember the good plays.

... So no, that line doesn't tell me much about our DBs,

I found another clue, maybe this line will help:

"Maryland, which hadn't completed a pass longer than 39 yards in its first five games, completed passes for 78, 47 and 44 yards. Virginia completed passes of 45 and 31 yards against Tech. Boston College connected for 46, 40 and 39, as Matt Ryan threw for 435 yards."

78 yarder was a TE that covg was blown by a S/LB combo

Ryan had over 150 yards passing to the TE; one guy outdid his numbers that game compared to ALL of last year.

UVA had only 3 completions to the WRs...rest were to the TE.

The problem is FAR beyond the CBs. Its the CBs, Ss and LB in pass protection. Its all 3 positions playing like crap and not in position.

Everytime someone hears pass D they want to place blame on CBs. Newsflash, in the zones we run, the LB covg and S covg is as, if not more important. Cbs are two positions in our D. Even at nickel, the slot is usually another S or shaded LB (bowen). We played all of 2 CBs last game and against Clemson and UVA. This is a TEAM Secondary issue.

But bottom line...that ALL lies on Tenuta, his defense, his schemes and his players.

name one d-coordinator who has not been torched at least a few times, there is one thing for sure, WITHOUT JOHN TENUTA THE PAST FEW YEARS WE WOULD HAVE BEEN LUCKY TO WIN 4 GAMES A SEASON.

Agreed....every DC gets lit up now and then. For JT this is more than normal however. But...all preseason we said our pass defense would be a big ?

But without JT or another very good DC...Chan would have been fired a long time ago. Chan should give JT 75% of his salary.

Yep, our defense that ranks:

14th in Scoring Defense
16th in Total Defense
2nd in Sacks
1st in Tackles for Loss

totally sucks. Clearly, everyone has figured Tenuta out.

Just looking at conference games, we've given up about 21 ppg which would rank in the top third of defenses nationally if you give all the other teams their scrub OOC games. Of course, nearly a quarter of the points our defense has allowed can be attributed to an INT run back for a TD, fumbled punt deep in our territory, and a fumbled handoff deep in our territory.

Our offense which has been averaging 18 ppg in conference about 16 ppg if you take the TD the defense scored has nothing to do with it.

In order to have a team that is ranked in the top 15 nationally in defense, special teams, turnover margin, and to not have a winning record, you practically have to trying to suck on offense.

We need another corner #34 had a rough day yesterday.

Yep! he got lit-up a few times.....But if your really gluttin....Watch the replay and tell me what you think of our senior free safty's effort(lazy)...MB is a better player than him right now.

So then I assume you agree with M-train's original assertion that the secondary needs fixing. That's all the clue was meant to support.

The defense wasn't bad vs Maryland. You guys are seriously barking up the wrong tree.

The defense wasn't bad vs Maryland.
Actually, they were. Overall, probably not, but a Top 20 (arguably) defense that gives up 21 in the first 20 minutes - all on long drives that last less than 2:00 - has not done their job.

We beat Maryland in every single statistical category except score. I'd call that 'not bad.'

The defense was not bad, the DC was. It was incredibly dumb IMO to allow their receivers to get deep. Make the rookie quarterback drive the team, don't just hand it to him.

Huh?

We had great coverage on the one deep ball. The first long TD was because of a pick and our guys going to tackle the wrong dude.
