I know Roof personally, and know how he hated to leave Tech for Duke under the circumstances he found himself in after everything fell apart at Notre Dame. The ND job was going to be a pay doubler (hard to turn that down). Ted was OK with the job demotion at Tech(a move he feels was spearheaded by Kim King and his posse, not by Gailey), but he was not able to accept the major pay cut that was going to come with it.
His brother had just died a few months earlier, couple that with both his and his wife's families being in the Atlanta area, it was very tough to move to North Carolina.
He has a 3 year contract, independent of the Head coach, so no matter what happens at the end of the saeson, Ted is covered thru 2005.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Ted as the next Duke head coach, or even return to Tech someday, as an assistant or even the Head coach(I'm talking YEARS from now).
Ted's a great guy, a great recruiter, and he's learning how to be a better coach. He loves the Yellow Jackets, and understands the politics that caused him to change his address. I hope he has great success where ever he goes.
By the way, while Ted respected O'Leary and credits him with giving him his opportunuties as a coach, he regularly referred to him as that A-hole O'Leary.

that SAD thing is we will never know if O'leary was holding Roof back.

It is very special when an alumni can coach your team, however when the team under performs it cuts the other way.

I sincerely hope everything works out for him

he will always be a member of the TECH family

I love Teddy boy. One of the all-time TECH greats IMHO. I personally beleive he'll be back one day. Success at Duke is practically impossible. My question - whats this Kim King crap that you refer to? Just curious, I have no idea. Anyone?

Kim King obviously carries alot of weight at the AA, and he should. Apparently he and other upper ups felt that Ted definitely didn't need to stay as defensive coordinator, and told Gailey this during his hiring process. It was all above board,I guess, but Ted feels that Kim King orchestrated this gentleman's agreement with Gailey. Ted also thinks that Gailey is a good hire and was looking forward to working with him.
.
BTW..Ted complained to family members regularly about O'Leary jumping his back on the sidelines everytime something went wrong on the field...even when it was O'Leary's schemes that he was told to call sometimes.

Same song, second verse for me! I have always stated Ted was saddled with GOL's fatally flawed defensive scheme, and the defensive failure really belonged to GOL instead of Roof.

I think Roof could have been better under another head coach. I like Roof and believe he loves Tech. However, he had to be the fall guy because he was the defensive coordinator.

I hope he does well at Duke and wish him the best. Maybe, he will be back at Tech sometime in the future, however, he might do very well at Duke.

Bobby Dodd was Mr. Tennessee when he played for them, but he learned to love Tech and Atlanta and never had the desire to go back to Tennessee. Since Roof has already had one stint at Duke, I am sure he feels somewhat comfortable there.

He will always be remembered by me as an excellent player at Tech and a coach who gave his all while here. He can be appreciated for that.

I will also appreciate Kim King. I watched him play at Tech years ago and he was an excellent passer. His heart is for Tech to be the best they can be. I cannot fault him for having an influence on Tech football.

Each of us would exert our own opinions on the progran if we had a chance. We just happen not to be as influential in the matter as Kim King. Kim is giving it all he has to help make Tech football successful.

I love Ted and would be very interested to see how things would be this year if he had stayed - would it be more like the Stanford game or the Virginia game? I personally believe we saw the real Ted Roof in Seattle.

But he's gone - my job now is to support Tenuta - but I'll be pulling for Ted in all but one game.

I'm happy for TED that he landed a DC job somewhere. Maybe he'll have more autonomy and can call the games without being screamed at by a guy who's never had a defense that can stop a 3rd down pass.

I wish him well.

Roof's defense last year was much better than many give him credit for. TECH held Syracuse, Maryland, UGAG, and #9BCS Stanford to one offensive TD each. The Clempson debacle occurred after Daryl Smith got hurt and then Ather Brown got hurt and finally was replaced by walk-on that was not fast enough to handle Dantzler on a career day.
Also, Roof's TECH team kicked the crap out of Tenuta's Carolina team on national tv.
I would love to see this year's team get to play with the Seattle Bowl coaching staff instead of this new bunch trying to get past their learning curve.

This will be unpopular, but I like Ted Roof as a person and think he is a good coach, but not a top tier DC. I felt that he was maybe in over his head a little bit and that may have to do with the the constant scrutiny under O'Leary. I hope Ted does well at Duke. I think that program is a good fit for him. I'd like to see him back at Tech one day, but he needs to get some more experience calling the shots himself at a program where the pressure is not so great

Best of luck to him and his family.

Roof will have some long days with Duke but it is good experience for him. Hopefully we will see him back on the Flats, on our sideline, one day.
