uhh, either way Darwin was right.. now i am really confused, i thought this was a Georgia Tech message board, not one from the Flat Earth Society

There actually was never a substantial number of people who believed the earth was flat. It has been a huge urban legend going back to the 1800's writing of some French atheist. I'm too lazy to look it up. Columbus was criticized, rightly, that he didn't have enough food to make it to Asia, which he didn't. Spain just didn't know about the New World yet.

It was covered in Robert Wuhl's "Assume the Position". Washington Irving wrote three books about Christopher Columbus and most common beliefs (like proving the earth was round) came from that book, which Irving embellished.
