The future of our Offense (GSU Perspective)

Tonight was the first night that our offense started to look similar to what I remember at GSU. I must say that GSU looked WAY faster (other than Dwyer he seems to be a PERFECT B-Back) in the QB positions and A-Back positions. GT has better recievers, even if Bebee dropped that easy TD catch.

The reason for my post?

You guys have not seen ANYTHING yet. I won't even go into detail about how much better the O-Line will be in a few years.

Future Improvements by 2010 Season...

QB's Speed (I think nesbitt should have had 2 more TD's I know his ankle was hurting) 4.3 speed will be the future of our recruits I expect
A-Back's Speed, not a knock on our guys but they look flat out slow vs. the old GSU a-backs
Backup QB's speed I expect to see much less of a drop off in the next few years
QB Reads (will be better next season and we will see more of the hypothetical "playbook")
Backup B-Backs will be much less of a drop off.
O-Line 1st and Goal should 95% of the time be a TD with this offense

Defense I hate to say this but this is the only area I think we could get worse. GT's D has kept this season alive for us. And historically PJ has not recruited this area as hard as the rest because he usually never needs D to win games. I expect a slight drop off in two years but hopefully i'm wrong.

I expect our 2010 season to be the start of Re-Loading for this team with constant turnover and hopefully a Dynasty status. I just hope to end a certain 6 season streak we have going very soon!!!

Nice analysis. I am also starting to worry about our future D-fense in some positions. Only time will tell. If you offense is good enough, you don't need a stellar defense because the defense will be improved by a better offense.

The game tonight was extremely fun to watch.

I think the GSU speed comes from playing teams that lack talent. Think of all the team speed on Miami. A healthy Nesbitt (4.5?) is fast enough to break away that long run.

The defense may get better. Look at the recruits we are bringing in. If we get Darren Myles and J. Davis, then we are getting serious enhancements in team speed.

PJ has always coveted really fast QBs and A-backs. The problem you run into in recruiting is that you've got to find that really fast QB prospect who wants to play QB in college. Most option QB in HS get moved to DB.

PJ's QBs at GSU were Greg Hill (4.39), J.R. Revere (4.45) and Chaz Williams (4.36). Williams was the heaviest of the three at 5'10", 215. It was Williams that was the QB the last time UGA saw this offense. Sewak was the coach then (2004) and VanGorder was the UGA DC. GSU put up 28 points and over 300 yards rushing against that D lead by David Pollack and a host of other current NFL players. GSU also lost their starting B-back in the first quarter of that game to an ankle injury.

PJ's A-backs at GSU were always really fast. Pretty much all of them were sub-4.45 guys, but not very big. They were usually 5'8" to 5'10" and around 180 lbs.

PJ will try to recruit as much speed as possible at all of the skill positions, but as it has been noted on this board, those players must be willing to block too. If he can get his skill positions in the 4.4 speed range, this offense will look like a blur to opposing defenses.

The current GT team is picking things up quicker than most people thought. They will be better at it next season and even better the next. Once Nesbitt gets close to perfect on his reads, the yards will come in bigger chunks. You saw some of that last night.

The boring part of this offense is that its three yards and a cloud of dust for a few plays. The exciting part is that it creates big plays. That was apparent last night.

Guys, the best is yet to come. My stepson played for PJ at GSU, and he proudly wears his two NC Championship rings. My hope is that you will get to hoist another championship banner on the flats in the near future.

PJALLTHEWAY, I also live in Rincon!

You mentioned Chaz Williams... He played much of the UGA game but 2nd string Trey Hunter was the one who threw the TD pass in this game. (to Jefferson who are both from Effingham!!!) This is a video I made a while back...

I post it every chance I get cause I think it's one of the better videos i've done.

I expect GT to have a much faster QB like Chaz or maybe even a freak fast QB like Jayson Foster in the future.

Very nice, thanks for sharing your perspective!

He will need a D to win consistently in a D1A BCS conference. There will be teams that shut us down from time to time, and we won't average 42 ppg against VT, BC, CU, UM, UMD, WFU, FSU and UGAG.

I like what Wommack's done this year, but we have to mash on the gas on D... we are losing a lot this year.

We need a D. Championships are won on D. I really hope Izaan Cross comes to Tech.

We will have the D.

I think the Abacks at GSU looked faster because they were playing inferior talent...I really want to believe that.

But I mean besides Roddy, who is a good Aback that we have ?

Anthony Allen

Peeples and Wright will get better. They will be SOLID A-backs down the road

2010

QB Nesbitt SR
BB Dwyer SR / Allen SR
AB Jones JR
AB Allen SR / Dwyer SR
WR Bebe SR
WR Melton JR

All these guys will have 2 full years in the system. If our O-line comes together by then we will be unstoppable on O. I cant wait!!!!!!

I'll bet that Dwyer is playing on Sundays in 2010.

Actually the GSU A-backs looked fast because they were fast. For instance, Mark Myers from Marietta ran a electonically timed 4.31 and then turned in a 4.23 for NFL scouts on GSU's Pro Day his Sr year. Lynon Jefferson ran back to back 4.37s at a FSU camp the summer before his Sr year in HS.

Granted, some of the 1-AA competition GSU faced didn't have the speed of say UGA or Oregon St., who GSU played while PJ was there. By the way, I think GSU put up over 400 yards rushing against a Dennis Erickson coached OSU bowl team under PJ.

Meh. I agree the execution and operating speed may be improved. However, the personnel is very very good and almost ideal. Kind of fortunate, I think. I disagree we're going to see upgrades unless we can start recruiting Florida Gator talent (Tech never has).

Healthy Nesbitt is plenty fast and I doubt we get much faster. Quicker maybe.

I doubt we'll see a better B back ever. Seriously. Dwyer may be the best running back at Tech in 30 years. Cox is a very solid back up. He's shown a nice burst inside and outside.

A backs Jones and Peeples are quality and plenty fast. Jones could block better. There could be some upgrade here, but those two plus #3 aren't bad.

The OL friggen tore it up last night. They have been dumped on, but they flat out got it done last night. I'll take that every time.

So far, the defensive recruits have more stars than the offensive recruits although we have less of them.

I think CPJ at GSU had to prioritize his recruiting more with a D-1AA recruiting budget. He knew his real advantage against teams would be his offensive scheme and he only needed mediocre talent on defense. Now he has enough money to focus on both sides of the ball.

If the late-90's taught us anything, it taught us that Defense/Special Teams (usually the same group of players) are absolutely needed to win championships, conference or national. Even the greatest offenses will have occasional 1999 WF games.

I also think Wommack has a done a good job this year with how shallow we have been past the DL. Does anybody have an explanation as to why we've been an interception machine this year?

I was thinking about that last night, could it be that womack blitzes less so there is more coverage? Or, is it because our front 4 is putting so much pressure on the QB the D backs are reaping the benefits?

I don't think you can play the same game at major D1 conference level that you might with a Navy program and be successful. We're going to need a STRONG defense in addition to whatever smackdown we do from the other side of the ball. Surely CPJ knows this. This ain't the WAC.
