The Miami Game

My confidence level dropped quite a bit after last night. I thought miami looked pretty dang good on defense.

Our only hope is to completely stuff their offense.

I predict a punt-fest.

I predict games by first guessing what the other team will score then deciding whether or not we can score more.

I figure Miami will score between 11 and 14 points.

I think we have about a 50% chance of scoring more than that.

I think Miami scores in the 20s. We don't tackle nearly as well as VT. I think we'll also score in the 20s, "due 2 da 'canes flyin 2 da ball", lacking discipline and missing gap control.

Big John, they are back at least on defense...their offense like Fsu is making strides to be back...Some of us that are a little older than some posters on this board, remember just a few SHORT years ago, how Miami and Fsu dominated...They will be fully back in 2009 and beyond, so we better keep recruiting and taking care of business on our end, or we will not be in the championship mix. Miami and Fsu along with UNC and of course GT will make the ACC very strong next year....The ACC is on it's way back! Someone on Espn noted that recently, next year the ACC should have at least 5 teams in the preseason top 25...

5-3 would be huge for us in the ACC this year. Defense will have to play lights out and we can only hope that um plays undisciplined assignments. If so and JN can make some good reads we might have a chance.

Will the ACC have any National Championship contenders next year? When was the last time the ACC had a real NC contender, meaning a team that went into, say, November with a legitimate chance to win the NC? FSU in 1999? This is why the conference seems so weak.

Miami in '05 was #3 in the BCS until we knocked em off in mid November.

Good point, and by my own pretty stupid definition of contender, you are correct.

But most people that year viewed Miami as a paper tiger, and Tech proved that, and then Miami got absolutely humiliated by LSU in their bowl game, which all ended up for yet another reason for everyone to think the ACC is weak.

I thought Miami looked bad last night, VPISU just looked worse. Patrick Nix still has the ability to turn seven points into three with his play calls.

Miami's D was impressive last night; especially in that 2nd half. VT's offense really starts with their running game, and the Hokies couldn't run against the Canes. Evans was a non-factor. You're absolutely correct about Nix's red-zone efficiency. But it was the Canes D that won the game.

One thing I have learned this year though: You can't predict how a defense will play us based on how they performed against other teams.

Florida State and Mississippi State are the best examples.

I hate to admit it, but after last night, I don't see us winning this game. Our O-line loses it for us. When you're playing your 3-deep on O-line that isn't good...especially when you're playing that D-line that Miami showed us last night.

But I can still hope.

Have to say I wasn't that impressed with either team last night. Miami's defense looked good but it was mainly because VT still has no real offense. Ditto on the other side of the ball. Yes, they both have good athletes, but I didn't see anything to make me worry any more than I normally do about whoever we play next.

Two words.

Patrick Nix.

I'm surprised by the pessimism of posters who watched Miami/VT last night. We have rebounded after each bad game this year, so I am optimistic about how we will play Thursday night. We have gotten some extra rest and time to work on some problems. Miami was at home last night for their last time this season. Next week, we will have the emotional boost that they had. I think there is a perception that we are not as good as we were when we played VT earlier in the season. Maybe this is true because of injuries, but we played VT close in Blacksburg and had a chance to win. That may be irrelevant at this stage of the season, but I think we will match up against Miami pretty well and will have an emotional hometeam crowd. I don't think we run away with this, but I think we will win unless we make a lot more mistakes than Miami does.

(1) Miami's offense isn't so good.

(2) Their defense plays well at times, but they have not played the triple option.

(3) Like about all of our games, this one is a 50/50 shot and will probably be a nail biter.

Miami's offense isn't that good, our defense should be able to contain them if our secondary is healthy and Word-Daniels is back.

Miami's defense is young and aggressive, our offense should be able to make some big plays if we play disciplined ball unlike what we saw at UNC. Miami's defensive strength is that they play a lot of people and keep the defense fresh. I don't think you'll see our offense gaining an edge in the fourth quarter due to wearing down the defense like we have in some games. Hopefully by the fourth quarter we'll have a commanding lead anyway.

I don't think many people on these boards are fearing Miami's offense. It's their defense that's scary. They have the type of defense that has big play potential. You don't need a great offense to win games if your defense is good.

It's the same story every week. If we don't have many mistakes on offense, we should be fine.
