The offense looked HORRIBLE today

:laugher:This is absolutely the worst statement I have EVER seen on Stingtalk. I about laughed out loud. I can guarantee that TB not throwing more passes against Samford isn't going to come back to haunt us! He might as well be throwing against Brookwood or Parkview.

We are 112 out of 119 in the NCAA in passing offense. We are 82 out of 119 in passing efficiency.
We have been in or near the bottom quartile in these stats all 5 years under Gailey. We have also lost to UGa all 5 years under Gailey. Coincidence?

We need all the passing reps we can get--especially in game situations.

I will agree that one of the worst statements on Stingtalk that I have ever seen--and that is saying a lot--is in this thread. The statement, however, is yours. You exhibit a complete ignorance about college football and the need for reps given the limted time that the NCAA allows for practice.

Some of us would like to beat UGa this year. We will need passing game proficiency to do that. Sorry that playing championship caliber football is not important to you.

While I'm not concerned to the degree of Jacketup, I definitely see where he's coming from. TB not throwing more passes against Samford could come back to haunt us as early as this Saturday. Of course, we'll never know if throwing against Samford could have helped him, but it definitely couldn't have hurt.

You guys are idiots. TB gets better practice passing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. "Airing it out" vs Samford is dumb when you're up by 4 scores. If Bennett had gotten injured throwing a deep ball vs Samford in the third quarter, you same bunch of naysayers would be roasting Chan on a spit.

The guy who needed to pass more yesterday was Nesbitt, if anyone.

You know, maybe I'm just an idiot, but I think the rules allow you to pass before going up four scores. We're not saying he should have been airing it out in the third quarter and running up the score, but it would have been nice if we had one solid drive backed mainly by Bennett's passing. Hell, it would have been nice to see one long TD pass which you guys are saying would have been so easy against the Samford D.

While he may face fiercer competition in practice versus our defense, he faced fiercer defense in practice than he did in the ND game too, but he struggled throwing the forward pass during that. You know a game situation is different.

Again, I'm not saying this is a disaster or a horrible move by Chan...but it could not have hurt to get him some IN GAME success throwing it down the field.

It seems to me like most expect that we should have worked more passing plays in for TB yesterday. I can certainly see that sentiment as valid, but I got the idea that JB was more of a short quick passes, one step at a time offensive guy wrt the passing game. I know we've seen JB say that he doesn't want to pigeonhole himself into one offensive style, but I just don't see him using much of a vertical passing game unless absolutely needed. I know we'd like to see a little more of it, but I just doesn't seem like it is a major portion of his offensive philosophy so far. Can anyone more in the know comment on his pass offense philosophy (beyond the article about how he coaches quarterbacks)?

Hey guys, let it rest. This is just the way things worked out yesterday. You could see it unfold in the first quarter.

Chan had to let TC get his 100+ yards. It happened quickly and easily. Before you could spit, we were up so many points that it would have appeared very unsportsmanlike to have TC throw a lot...like we were just trying to run up the score. Chan is just not that kind of a person. Better to play 70 players and try to keep the score respectful than to pound a demoralized opponent into the ground.

We all would have liked to see TC develop his passing attack. As it turned out, there was just no acceptable way to do it without looking like a bully while risking needless injuries.

It actually could have hurt if he had, well, gotten hurt. The bigger problem is some on here and on other boards second-guess everything Gailey does and label those who don't as ignorant. This year will be different than previous. Mark it down.

Welcome to the life of a head coach :). We are far nicer about it than Alabama fans/boosters will be if they start losing games.

They bellyache when we lose.

They bellyache when we win.

/head explodes

Well, it keeps the long wait for the next game interesting, in any case.

You are completely wrong. If you have a good enough running game with just enough passing to keep them from loading 8 or 9 in the box, you can be very successful. Pittsburgh and Baltimore have both proven this point in the pros and Oklahoma in college ball. The short passing game has also proven to be a successful formula as that is what the whole West Coast offense is predicated upon as well as the Spread offense that WVU utilized against us.

I hope Buzzoff is back up soon so these miserable people have a place to commiserate with each other and leave us out of it.

You know, maybe you are, because Bennett was 8 of 9 on Saturday.

Yeah, someone should have told Tashard to take a dive while he was running the ball 60 yards to the endzone, so we could practice passing more.

Or maybe someone should have told our punt returner to take a knee or run backwards, to give Bennett more field to practice on.

Go back and watch the game, dude. We passed plenty. We HAD to get Tashard his 100 yards before we benched him, and that requires rushing plays.

With no turnovers from the QB spot, you can be very successful. We would have won an ACC championship and 12 games overall last year if we had (Reggie-Turnovers) at QB. If TB can just do that, we're frontrunners for the ACC Title.

And there were at least 2 passes that were counted as runs (the Greg Smith TD being one) because they were thrown laterally.

I don't think you are an idiot. I think you are just standing too close to the Chasm of Idiocy, and are thinking about jumping.

But I wish the hard-core nay-sayers had your sense of introspection.

We actually did have one drive that was all passing, culminating in the swing pass (lateral) to G Smith. Bennett looked sharp on the passes he threw, the receivers hung onto the ball and we did about all we could really do against a team like Samford.

You exhibit a complete ignorance about the quality of your competition. TB gets MUCH better practice going against the likes of MJ, Word-Daniels, Burnett,The Machine, etc. than Samford.

Our defense plays "championship caliber football" not Samford.

I'm not SOME of ya'll--I obviously don't want to beat Ugay and don't think we can b/c we didn't pass enough against Samford.

This is what I was calling myself an idiot in reference to. Don't get too excited thinking that I actually think I'm an idiot :).

One thing I would like to point out is that everyone says how great it was that we got to see our backups get in game reps because we were so far ahead(edit: in fact you even said that about Nesbitt, beej), that we could evaluate talent and look at our depth, how good Dwyer looked, etc. However, they practice against a much better defense every day, and yet everyone still thinks it's good that they get in game reps.

Now, shouldn't the same logic apply to Taylor? If in game situation is different for backups, why isn't it for Bennett? We're not talking about an established QB here...he has never had a good passing game as a starter in a meaningful game(of course, he has played only two...he is inexperienced). Didn't Chan say how all of last year Reggie did GREAT in practice, but then he struggled a lot in games? There is really no substitute for in-game experience.

On our second drive, Tashard had eight rushing attempts and Taylor had one passing attempt to a wide receiver. I know we routed them, but it's not like it happened on four consecutive plays. It would have been good to have Taylor lead us on a passing drive without completely leaning against Tashard, just to get him comfortable. Maybe even just one deep ball attempt...we know our WRs can beat their corners, let's have Taylor practice those easy throws that we know he can make but missed during the ND game.

Hopefully I am completely wrong and Taylor will come back Saturday and be the Taylor of the Gator Bowl. Maybe we are just sandbagging so that BC will be completely surprised by an aerial attack on Saturday. I'm also not quite as worried as my posts make me out to be(I still think we are going to beat BC and Taylor will be fine), however Beej called me an idiot so I have to justify myself.
