The preseason coaches poll is out!!!!!!

It always amazes me when a GT fan totally sticks his foot in his mouth like this.

We WON the Coaches Poll in 1990 to win a share of the NC. Without the coaches poll we are second to a Colorado team that had one loss and should have had 2 more on top of it considering that BS 5th down and the Rocket Ismail punt return called back.

Who is better at voting.. Coaches? Or a bunch of dip**** pencil necked writers who don't know dick about the game?

Come on man, use your head. :pat:
The problem is that most of those coaches don't even watch the games and hand their ballot to an assistant. Although, I will admit that I didn't take 1990 into account when I made my statement. And for that, I am ashamed.

True, though as I pointed out there are really only two other games that are likely to be between ranked teams. It looks like it will be Iowa-Penn State though. It's @Penn State, already scheduled for 8 p.m. on ABC, both teams have an easy first 3 games, and it can easily be hyped up by the fact that Iowa upset them last year.

Actually I think Cal v Oregon is more probable. Cal is likely going to be 3-0 by then (possible Maryland upset is all there is) and if Oregon is as well then they've beaten both Boise St and Utah.

Penn State would create a better gameday atmosphere and it's a night game. If Oregon were to survive that early stretch, it may be a tough decision though.

Beyond a f'in joke that AU got 12 (!) votes in the poll. The same AU that had a losing record last season and made one of the worst coaching hires in the modern era.

Big difference between a preseason coaches poll and the final poll which determines who they're crowning as MNC. I bet head coaches put a lot of thought into putting us ahead of Colorado in 90. The AP had already been released and a lot of coaches went against it because they knew it was ridiculous.

PS- I recently saw a list of the bowl games from 90, UVA played Tenn (SEC champ) in the Sugar Bowl. Look no further to see how jacked up the bowls were back then.

Over the course of a season, how many different teams do you think the coaches see in their film study? How many different games of that weeks opponents are viewed? I bet they get a real good idea of the relative strengths of about 50 teams.

Many of the AP poll voters are beat writers for a particular team, who don't have much time to watch anything but the team they cover, either.

But regardless of the argument about watching games, coaches understand the games they watch. I have no doubt that the worst, dumbest coach in America understands the game better than, say, Mark Bradley.

The AP poll and coaches poll have almost always agreed on the #1 team, so the argument that there is any sort of large difference between them is weak.

In the few cases where they have differed on the national champ (ignoring probation-related differences), the coaches have always been right:

1997: Coaches pick strong Nebraska team over lame Michigan team with even lamer DB who stole the Heisman Trophy from Peyton Manning.

1991: Washington over Miami criminals (this one is really a toss-up and both polls were incredibly close.)

1990: GT over Colorado

1978: Southern Cal over Bama (USC beat Bama 24-14 at Legion Field and yet the AP poll voted Bama #1?)

Do you think any that should be? Damn near every team is down. The Big East defending champion returns 2 starters on defense.
I was just observing, I don't follow Big East that much to know if they should have any team ranked. If the post-season poll is the same, it's about time to restructure who is BCS and who is not.

They still have 3 more years before the BCS can be realigned.

To everyone wondering about Spurrier, he was asked to stop his practice of voting for Duke every year, "For the integrity of the polls". I'm too lazy to look up a link, but this happened either last year, or the year before.

Did they ask Spurrier to stop, or the USC-E staff member who fills out his polls for him? ;)

Preach on, brother!
