The Process: Saban's Recipe for Recruits

Why the hell are we listening to Saban? With all the hype surrounding Alabama, Saban hasn't had to RECRUIT players, he's just had to PICK players. Give Paul Johnson the ability to PICK players and he'd whoop Saban's overrated ass like Bob Stoops. And not only does Saban pick players, he picks which ones he wants to keep after he's picked them. Unethical and deplorable. Saban's formula for success: Be at overhyped SEC school and screw over kids to get what you need. Y'all ever think about why Justin Thomas is at Tech?

You just keep overplaying the big cry. Saban is not "stretching far beyond the rules as written", nor is Saban interpreting rules wrong. Saban is like the accountant that finds every available tax break and shelter available. The reason many other coaches (and note Saban isn't alone in using grey shirts) is because they or their employers have scruples. You might argue the intent of the rule, Sabanites will argue what the rule actually says. While you are looking for what the rules prohibit, Saban is looking for what it allows. While you're busy honoring verbal commitments to recruits, Saban correctly points out that verbal commitments are non-binding.

Auburn on the other hand, skirts the rules.

Saban is like McConnell, last gov of va. Who will probably go to jail. If you look at mcconnell, he did not violate any of Vas laws by the letter of the law. The prosecution has that working against them. But he öööö straight is getting charged anyway, and we shall see if he goes to jail anyway. And virginia will sadly go through the exercise of making the ethics laws clear enough that an idiot can understand. 100 years of governors interpreted the law correctly, in a reasonable way, and this idiot could not.

This is not IRS rules hoisted unfairly on Saban. This is gentlemens rules agreed upon by the very body he is a member of. And the SEC has had to go through the sad exercise of making their own rule that is written tighter than the NCAA rule so that Saban cannot exploit it.

Again, you act like this is an IRS law backed by agents. This is like the sorority rule about not smoking in your letters. Saban is the kind of asshole who would do that but claim he wasnt wearing the letters, he was wearing the spanx that was wearing the letters. But hes the most popular girl in school, so the sorority quietly changes the rule to fix Saban's idiotic interpretation.

Right on, brother. To be like Bama, all we have to do is filter which 4 and 5 stars meet our big and fast criteria and then sign them. Simple as dat.

No, then you would have to follow that up the next year with deciding which of the big and fast 4 and 5 star players is not living up to the hype, then find a way to get them off the team and replace them with newer big and fast 4 and 5 star players.

First, when Saban first arrived at Bama he didn't automatically get the pick of the litter. Saban built the empire back to prominence, so there's that.

Second, Thomas is at Tech because given the choice Saban chose the big fast guy (see OP).

Correct - Alabama was an ailing, .500ish team when Saban got there and Saban turned their recruiting from 25 to 2 annually. People can say what they want about grey shirts, but they cannot discount Saban's tireless effort.

Thomas is at GT because Saban didn't need him at QB, his position of choice. FWIW, Thomas is a little small for Saban's CBs - where he was slotted to play, so a transfer is a logical step for him if he wanted to get on the field faster and in his position of choice.

+1...very factual

Who questions Saban's effort level and coaching prowess? Ole Dooley put forth great effort too while implementing Kemp Gate. Does anyone doubt Switzer's effort level or coaching skills when he was recruiting/purchasing the best players available for OU? Effort and coaching skills do not provide a free pass for cheating, whether outright or in the shadows of streeeetching rules.

What changed from when Saban was at MSU or the NFL? The landscape and culture of the SEC of course. Was he THAT much better of a coach at LSU & Bama? The people here defending Saban, probably took the position that A-Rod simply worked harder than everyone else and that others were simply jealous of his success.....oops!

To date, there is no definitive proof of cheating at Alabama academically in order to get the best athletes through the school regardless of their education requirements. The CNN report on playing like adults, but reading like children lists that Alabama does not record entry SAT/ACT scores, which I tend to doubt, but it does list that they have one reading tutor on staff and they have no special admit process for qualification into the school. I think it is reasonable to assume they probably have some literacy issues, but those issues are probably much smaller than any of the egregious offenders.

SOS, I don't think academics are the issue with Saban. Bama wasn't losing recruits for academic reasons long before he got there.

Is the argument then that it is simply money? The purchasing of loyalty of highly touted recruits

No, the argument is outlined nicely by beej67 in post no. 11 in this thread.

there are a few points that are not listed by beej that must occur before you can follow the simple 4-step process:

0.a. - win a bunch as a coach, like a BUNCH
0.b. - have incredible facilities and a reputation to go with it
0.c. - have a fanbase that throws dollars and approval at every win regardless of how costly in other terms

now, proceed to 1

Where did he win a bunch prior to implementing the 4-step process? Not MSU or the NFL. Maybe early on at LSU and Bama.
