Anyone think we'll see more of that 5 defensive back stuff we had last season? I think we might just because Cooper Taylor and Rashaad Reid should get better (or at least stronger) and we get Tarrant back to get another good CB.

Depends on LB play and situation.

we played in a 5 db set almost 60% of the snaps last season. Not sure how much more we can play it. We play it dictated by the offenses we face, and most of them are 3+ WR sets. Reid, Butler, Burnett, Taylor, Reese were the 5 most out there, when reese got hurt we had Peterson out there.

Long gone is the traditional I form....we are hardly in base anymore.

Really? Didn't notice that it was there so often. Perhaps I was mistaking a DB for a LB....

Getting Tarrant back will be big..He was starting over Butler before his unfortunate setback...

rewatching that Ugag game last night it was obvious how Ugag/Stafford torched Butler...
I believe Sweeting, Tarrant and Reid will help our CB position next year...Butler will have stiff competition to hold his starting spot for sure...

Yes sir really. In fact that statistic came straight from Wommacks mouth.

In nickel we walk a 5th db up to the slot WR, essentially lining him up where a LB could be in base.

I think this makes a lot of sense

We have a ton of young talent in the defensive backfield. Assuming Tarrant can regain his form quickly our biggest problem in the backfield is figuring out who sits. We have good tackling secondary guys. We have numbers at linebacker, but not many have distanced themselves from the pack. Now if the next game is a run dominated team, then we go back to the standard 4-3. But why not make the five defensive back, two linebacker formation the base set?

Because you become more vulnerable to the run. Yes, having a 4-2-5 like USCeast would be good since we have fast athletic LBs but the disadvantage is gap responsibility and relying on the S and CB to come up in the box and make tackles.

I would bet having one of the best DLines in the nation had something to do with seeing that so much last year. I'd be interested to see how we adjust to the losses there with personnel and packages.
